Kiwi boy, but I'm not able to ride this time as today I had a head-on with another bike on the Oaks single track and broke my hand when his handle bar hit it Smiling
John.

kiwiboy's picture

Sorry to hear it John, thats a bummer. Hope that's not too serious, as in permanent damage.
Was that an oncoming rider from another group?

Anyhow, perhaps you can give me directions to the start of the ride from Wentworth Falls station? I think you were the only possible who had done the ride before - the rest of us a Oaks/Andersons virgins.
cheers
Mark

Hey dudes... directions are easy, just follow the recording from today's outing:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2843293

You can open this in a larger window here... zoom in & out of course to get the road names and stuff:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://trail.motio...

62.20Km, 1,276m climbed, 1,948m descent. The detour over the railway at Woodford was to the local store which has nice veranda and serves pies and pasties and stuff.

To answer your other question, start of the sniggle John met another rider (from group of 3) coming the other way - ouch indeed!

Carlgroover's picture

has a wonderful website giving good directions to all the rides in the Blue Mountains, and they will proably serve you better than I could give, a search with his name will get you straight there.
Yes the chap I crashed into was with another group that were a little lost.
It's normal to only go down on this single track for safety but not everyone knows this, and I was really blasting down. Lucky we both locked up the brakes before impact.
John
ps also alot of people only say they will do the ride 1 or 2 days before it happens
so you may still get a guide.

kiwiboy's picture

for the heads up.
So you guys did it in 3 1/2 hours riding time?!?
I'm sure we can manage if no guide shows.
But the more the merrier. We have 4 confirmed for the Andersons start.

Jeez John,

I am very sorry to hear your hand has come off second best. That's two non-trivial stacks in two days mate. What will that be then... 6 weeks off the bike? No Canberra trip for you! And possibly Coffs too, if you were going to do that as well. A massive shame. But this is the life we lead.

I will have to think of some other one-handed recreational pursuits that you can enjoy while you are off the bike. Jogging? Table tennis? I think Trivial Pursuit possibly reduces your chance of injury too. Or how about my favourite - manipulating the TV remote? Some of the other dirty buggers here might have some other ones. I bet your better half has the wish for you to spend your weekend time with her now!

I hope you are a fast healer. Typing these posts is possibly a chore when you're one handed too! Laughing out loud Heal quickly.

Rob should get a helmet cam and just follow me on every ride, we'd have some great footage (or numbers) in no time. As for time off the bike, this week maybe the exercise bike will get used (very dull) and as soon as I can some road riding with mostly one hand to stay fit.
Left handed surfing (goofy hand?) the net I guess will fill in some time and I hope you're reading this slowly as it took a long time to type, caps are HARD!
Cheers John

Guys
I was thinkin a good weekend for the mountains too, but checked the Cityrail website & there is trackwork this coming weekend.

Try riding up and back.

kiwiboy's picture

If I read that right, the trackwork is between Penrith and Central - ok to catch trains from Glenbrook to Wentworth I think?
The Cityrail site says trains will run between Penrith and Lithgow, so if driving to Glenbrook, should be ok.
I'll confirm tomorrow after ringing Cityrail.

kiwiboy's picture

So the info is that the trains will run between Glenbrook and Wentworth Falls - it is only Central to Penrith that is out.
Our plan is to drive to Glenbrook and train up to Wentworth. It is possible that if others that want to come and are constrained by the lack of trains to Glenbrook we might be able to fit another couple in.

Hey guys, I’d really like to go on this one, but I don’t want to hold anybody back as you are training. Do you know if it is easy to keep on the way to Glenbrook? If it is easy to get there I can ride in my own pace without disrupting your ride.

Cheers,

Leo.

kiwiboy's picture

Hey Leo
None of the riders in our group of 5 have done the ride before, and we are of mixed abilities. We hear it is reasonably easy to follow, and since we are Oaks virgins as well it will need to be Smiling

If you are keen we'll see you there - or ping me a message and I'll give you my mobile number. Looks like a 4-5 hour ride.
cheers

I just saw your post John. That's cacks. One of the best yet. It seems like you won't be left wanting for other recreational pursuits - and at least you have a good laugh at it.

The thing about the left handed surfing - I am undecided if the chicks will dig your splint as an injury and end up taking pity on you. You could even throw in a good war story or two about how it happened (stretching the truth to look cooler - just that little bit!). Or they will just think you're a geek for surfing with a splint on. Sticking out tongue

You could also play more snooker/pool and use the splint as a bridge to guide your shots easier. Is it on the correct hand? Possibly it might not make you shoot any straighter. I doubt it would help me at all - I suck at pool.

Liam.

Anybody coming can ring me on 0417021582 - we are meeting at Glenbrook station 8 to 8-15. BBQ is off the agenda - we'll eat somewhere nearby.
We have 5 riders at present - all welcome.
cheers

Hi guys... i think i ran into you today on the singletrack section of the oaks ride... were you a large group with a high female:male ratio??? my mate got a flat and i went back to sort him out (being the gentleman that i am). funny that i then got a flat whilst fixing his... my bike was upside down, nobody anywhere near it, and i heard a hissing sound. the gods were unhappy with me... how does that happen?
anyways, i hope you made it up the other side of the canyon okay...
maybe i'll join you guys for a ride one day

take care out there

kiwiboy's picture

at our expense.....

We had one lady in the pack, and 6 guys or 4 depending on when you might have seen us - by the time we got to the single track we were down to 4.

We had a shocker - started with late train, then loose spokes, then broken chain, then we busted the rear swing arm on a Scott MC 40 about 20km into Andersons. Trail repairs kept us riding (still 10km+ from Woodford!!NOBODY wants to carry that far) amazing what you can do with ziplock ties, allen keys and tape.
Soon another broken chain, doh!! So one rider exit at Woodford with busted bike and another feeling the effects of lingering flu, then we were 5. All over we thought for gear problems, but to add insult to injury we had 4 flats on the Oaks - I had a similar experience to you, a mate fixing his, we mounted ready to go and o no I have a flat too!! Fark! Laziness was my enemy, I didn't pump it far enough (um twice) and got 2 snakebite flats in quick succession on the lovely bit of single track - didn't stop the ear to ear grin though, that sure is a sweet piece of track.

Well you gods, bring it orn!! We are not defeated (but seriously knackered tonight).

And Leo and D-on - great to have you along, trust me, it isn't normally that bad.

Happy trails.

Mark

So many sharp edge rocks and tree roots sticking up on what is otherwise relatively smooth trail. We've had this discussion before about this particular section of trail. IMHO unless you are incredibly lite and or move very very well around your bike you need to be running high 30's in your rear wheel. I run 40 down this section. Recently we hit it as a group ride, stopped at the picnic hut at the top of the sniggle. Oh wise one (read smart arse) told everyone to check rear presure and up it to 40. Strangley enough those that new better got 2 flats in quick succession as well. Ugh, we live and learn.

Hope the Scott doesn't cost too much to fix, strange another mate ripped his rear derailler off his Scott, no hangers here, and it cost him some dollars to get fixed.

happy trails

kiwiboy's picture

Note to self - review others discussions on rides upcoming before going.

Actually it was the front wheel for all of them for me - I was bombing it far too fast down there - clearly could have suffered the same fate as John if anybody came the other way. Seriously great track, to be taken at one speed only - fast as you bloody can!!

As for the Scott - my second best bike being ridden by a mate (and prospective buyer :-/ ). Seriously, beginning to wonder if it is cursed. Just after I got it (2nd hand but only 18 months old) I busted the front triangle on the seat post right at the bottle holder. Took nearly 4 months for a replacement, and I got so tired of waiting I got a Rush - which btw is now too hard to leave, I am a lefty convert.

Anyway, finally got the Scott back, after great anticipation on the first ride out went over the handlebars on a nasty rock garden (forgot to check the fork rebound and compression, too long on the lefty doh) and then blew the rear shock. Not to mention doing my knee and back. And probly bent the rear derallier (recently upgraded to XT!!)

Ok, so we get the shock serviced, check the derallier - boys at the shop reckon she'll be right (bollocks!!) and next ride out snap the chain, then stand on my trusty trail glasses fixing it - went home in disgust.

And now the rear swing arm - ???? Give me a break. By the time I fix this it will be a new frickn bike!!

I'll post a photo of the trail fix - it was a beauty. Luckily my wife is only 64kg so she drew the short straw and was able to ride it out (watching her Cannondale wistfully, ridden by another) despite the wheel eventually flopping around like a mad thing (and the seriously hard non-girly seat!!)

Arrgh!

Undeterred we soldier on.....

Wisemans ferry next week - I'll be posting a ride.
