Sadly my much loved Stumpjumper FSR has sufferd a fatal blow when he fell off the car whilst travelling at 110km/h.... was a heart stopping moment to look into the rear vision mirror only to see my bike bouncing along the bitumen!

ANYWAY...

Now I am on the hunt for a new dually- something between CX and Trail, not too racey not too sluggish either...but oh what to buy???
Chasing a fun, light bike for a short female rider- any suggestions???
Please keep it brief - what n why in a few sentences etc...

Cheers T

no matter what model(xo, x1, x2, x3) try for a 2011 or 2012 because they are better than the 29'er of the 2013 range

not sure whether you were interested but giant also make them in women specific frames
jump on site like bike exchange for a good deal or if your keen theres often a good one on gumtree

i ride one now its awesome, i do everything from cross country, enduros, to north shore and some mild downhill
its not heavy at all and it takes the punishment like a boss

But make sure you secure it properly next time.

Ouch (about the Stumpy)!
What's your budget? Is anything salvageable from the Stumpy? Are you looking for a whole new bike, or new frame and rebuild using some of your old stuff?
Sooo many options.
Have fun looking.
Cheers,
Michael

Hi,

I spent the last few months searching and test riding bikes to help my partner find a new bike. Previously she rode a Merida 120
(http://www.merida-bikes.com/de_ch/bike/2010/10/M...) (this bike)
She wanted something lighter, faster and easier to pedal.
After test riding heaps of bikes this is the one she bought http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/mountain/cr...

Its truly and amazing bike to ride, its so fast and light, thru-axle front and rear, the new shimano slx brakes work as well as my xt version of the same (ice tech) brake. Great forks and shock, its so much bike for the money and well worth a test ride. Obviously there are better bikes out there depending on your budget but there's not a better one under the 3k mark IMO

it is a very nice looking bike & is bling ,would have got one myself if I didn't get a Scott . The only downside is the trek guys don't discount even for cash , but given that it is a damn good looking bike for them

sorry to hear about ya stumpy , not a nice way to die .

if u still keen for a specialized brand bike , go see Brad at committed cycles cannington , say martin sent ya in .. he'll do a good deal on something for ya for sure

i cant say there is a best all round bike than a stumpy . not too light not too heavy.

happy shopping

Im very sorry for your loss. But DAMN that would have been funny.

Budget?

If ur short, maybe stay away from a 29. I think they look a little awkward anyway, and In smaller sizes very odd.
Im 6' and used to ride a small HT, and even that had plenty of length in the seat post.
Giant have always been great value (no 26ers this year, unless you want AM or DH bike), but something like a 4" anthem would be ideal. Trance is also good (what i had). at ~5" its a little more aggressive. Just don't expect to find anything carbon new or 2nd hand.

Apart from that, just look at all the major brands for something 26 with ~4" travel in your budget and test ride them as much as you can.

How did the bike come off the car? In curious as I'm looking to get a roof rack, most likely a Thule 591, and they worry me sometimes when you see them wobbling along on the top of a car

MrMez's picture

I always cringe when I see bikes on a (todays) roof racks.
When road racing, we had ones where you took the front wheel off and clamped it into a bracket and strapped the rear in. Very secure. The ones today that use a strut just look dodgy. Also a little hard if you have an SUV or are short Eye-wink

On my suv, which is WAY too high to think about putting a bike up there, I use this...

http://www.swagman.net/products/single-arm-xp-ra...

The main reese hitch adapter stays in all the time. The actual rack is held in place with two pins so it can be quickly removed. Remove the top pin and you can swing the rack down to get in the boot. The top tube holder also has a lock so you can pop into the shops and not panic about your bike(s) getting stolen.

I have two on my roof. My bikes are locked rock solid onto them. To all the doubters, they're not going anywhere.

Danny, if you want to borrow one to take the bike to Adelaide at Christmas let me know.

A little more bike that you're looking for, granted, but they are a great bike!

Pedals almost as well as the Mach 4 it replaced, climbs just as well, and descends like a demon! The only negative is that if you get lazy, it doesn't perform all that well. As soon as you give it more though, it takes off and loves it Smiling

Discodan's picture

Thanks for the offer Phil. I most likely won't take my own bike down, too much pain and extra drag for one or two rides. It also helps that my brother lives in Adelaide and happens to be the sales rep for both Cube and Intense so I should be OK to borrow something Smiling

I run 2 thule 561 racks on my roof and I have no concerns that my bikes will fall off. They are very secure. The 561 model requires you to take the front wheel off though.

As for a replacement bike if you have the funds I would be looking at the Santa Cruz TRc or the Pivot as mentioned above. Both would be awesome bikes.

The ultimate chick MTB! If I was a chick this is what I would ride

Thanx for the suggestions folks-
TREK- had a look at these and yes nice bike for the money
PIVOT- am very impressed with the Mach 5.7- and am so pleased to see PIVOT have not forgotten the smaller riders amongst us- the XS is perfect size for me!
YETTI ASR- love it- but even the small is TOO BIG for me!

SPECIALISED- a new Stumpy would be perfect- but they all seem to be 29ers now and I am NOT interested in 29er dually- have a 29er hard tail already! Want to stay with 26er for dually!

AS FOR HOW THE BIKE FELL OFF THE CAR.... My mate- a 'MAN' - loaded the bike onto his bike carrier- Grip Sport brand, with wheel cradle and clamp down arm- that is attached to the tow bar at rear of car... I let him do the loading /tightening as it was his car and I was not familiar with the carrier style .... Then about 30mins later as we travelled at 110km/h down the Fwy the bike just suddenly fell off... I can only conclude that the clamp arm must have vibrated loose and slipped due to the sloping angle of the StumpJumper top tube?!
It is just one of those things- accidents happen...........just glad the loose bike did not cause a motor vehicle accident!

Specialized have got the female range (i.e. the Safire - http://www.specialized.com/au/gb/bikes/mountain/...) - that are in 26'ers?

The Safire looks pretty comparable to a Stumpy

Oldernslower's picture

That probably the reason - On the Grip, the 'clamp down' arm that the clamp fits on isn't fixed and will rotate if the clamp isn't clamped at the lowest part of the frames top tube - usually next to the seat tube. If clamped too far up the frames top tube the clamp would no longer do its job once the arm rotates.

Would HIS car insurance cover it?

Think Midland Cycles had stumpy 26rs in last time I looked. Give Mark a ring.

Maybe you should have a look at this then....

Sorry to hear about the rig..

I just recently bought my new bike and wanted a bike that was fun a suitable on a wide range of tracks.. so after a bit of research I found that for me the Trek Fuel EX 7 gave the best value for money. So far I'm very satisfied, it climbs well on technical bits and are fun on descents. It has given me a lot of joy and pleasure on the track the last few months since I got it Smiling

Cheers!
