I've got a friend who loves MTB but hasn't been in years. He's out of shape, just out of surgery, etc. I'm looking for something with carparks at both ends and mostly downhill. If you have any recommendations please advise on bike requirements. Currently all he has is a 1980s rigid.

As a side note I'm on a Norco Bigfoot. Is there anything interesting to hit up in the inner west?

Knapsack reserve at Glenbrook has nice flattish single track. There is also a new downhill track (not yet opened, but no far off).

There is a carpark at the end of Barnet St Glenbrook of the GWHWY.

OMV isn't the flattest singletrack by any stretch of the imagination, but it does have a short "green" (easy) loop and a slightly more technical blue loop. I wouldn't want to do it on a rigid, but I have seen people on those type of bike and survive. Otherwise how about Jubes MTB Park in Wahroonga (check out the trail pages for more info.)

Lane Cove is a good ride to ease into

Sorry. Turns out this location isn't yet legal.
Apologies.

Try the Royal National Park. The trails north of the rail lines are mostly smooth.

If you're in Western Sydney, why not have a look at Yellomundee?

IIR, looking from the car park (with the road behind you), the steep and more technical stuff is to the right... I think you want to find the nice easy stuff that twists through what's almost a field? If you're close by and don't want to ride for too long, surely this has to be the best option?

.. can't think of anywhere where there is a reasonable length single track which is mostly downhill with car parks at both ends - you don't want much do you! Smiling, but agree you can do a nice loop at Yellowmundie without much climbing or techy stuff. See following gpx file of said loop.

The track around Narrabeen lakes is all flat and you get some nice flowing single track joining onto shared walking tracks and footpaths. I go there with the kids and have done a few night rides there. For someone wanting to get back into it, it is pretty ideal. You can start around the South Creek entrance and go around to near the Narrabeen Sports centre, they closed off the complete circuit that went through the golf course, but its about 7 kms one way, return, it makes a nice easy ride, its just flat.

That Yellomundee track map above is a good one. It's the same course WSMTB use for the NSW All Schools XC with our club U10s track thrown in as well.

For new riders we normally start them with a warm up on the U10s track - which is that 200m loop hard on your left (north) as you enter the large initial clearing. This can be followed by a lap or two of the northern loop - which is the northern half of the main "figure 8". Start next to the tractor tyre on the eastern side of the clearing. It has some nice single track with minimal climbing.

Then venture into the southern loop - again start on the eastern side of the clearing near the tractor tyres (but don't head south on the track right next to the tyres - that would be against the normal flow).

Enjoy!
