My MTB was stolen two nights ago in the Winmalee region.
The details are:
Model: Giant Trance X2,
Colour: Dark Blue,
Features: Kashima forks and stubby bar ends,
Serial Number: GU016524

Police have been notified and it turns out six other houses were targeted too.

Wow, that sucks Paul.
We got robbed here about 3-4 years ago.
Pretty distinctive Trance yours with the kashima and different wheels.
I hope it was insured?
Road bikes still there?

Must be school holidays or something......
That's a bummer Dutchy.
What he said ^

Sad to hear that Paul. I guess we all need to be more vigilant.

Thanks guys.
The road bikes are fine. Unfortunately I lapsed and left the MTB outside for one night. Of all nights for one of these cockroaches to come around - wish I was allowed to shoot the fuckers!

The bike is quite distinct in the forks and the different rims front - rear. Which also means I should be apologising to you Ian for losing your rear rim. And to think that I was only a day or two from swapping them over as my Stan's no tubes kit has arrived but the rear tyre hasn't.

I would also recommend reading your insurance company's PDS as Allianz only insures up to $500 for items left out side and then hit you with a $400 excess, plus increase your monthly premiums to suite a loss of no-claim bonus...

The Police have already called and have taken finger prints of the houses nearby, which also had some things stolen, so hopefully there's a quick resolution.

NO good mate, lets hope you receive some positive feedback.
For those on Strava I strongly suggest that you change your profile settings to block out the 800m radius from where your ride starts, especially if you ride from home. Strava is open for anyone to view and you never know who is watching!

Dutchy74's picture

Thanks Char. Good suggestion too.
I'm not sure if this was a targeted theft as there were six other houses which had things stolen from their yards. I stuffed up and had my bike sitting outside for that particular night. The first time I've ever done something so stupid like that and now I'm paying the price.

Real sad news Paul. Hope the cops can find them. This seems like a common thing in the lower mountains these days. Every few months(sometimes weeks) you hear about a pocket of houses broken into or items stolen from back yards.

Dutchy74's picture

Thanks Chuck.
I have heard of kids coming up on the trains to go through some properties and then make a dash bake to the 'riff, however I thought I was a little further out to be affected by this sort of stuff. Unfortunately these low-lifes live everywhere and take the first opportunity to show how shitty they are.

This is not the first MTB to be stolen, so unfortunately I have had experience in this.

Could now be a time to save up for a nice carbon 29er that I've been looking at over the past 12mths.

Thanks to everyone for their sympathies. Hopefully someone is stupid enough to ride the bike around the Blue Mountains for us to catch the prick - or the unfortunate soul who bought from Cash Converters...

You may get it back. They are required to report serial numbers to police via a feed into the COPS database. A lot of nicked bikes are recovered that way.

Dutchy74's picture

Hey mate. Good to see you on here. Thanks for the info, as I didn't know that actually happens.
Well things went from shitty to extra shitty since the race on Sunday, as you can see. Shocked)

bikemad's picture

but does your bike have a red anodized front hub?I saw a bike on the back of a car in jindy yesterday that looked identical to yours cept had red front hub....

Dutchy74's picture

Bikemad:
Thanks for the look out but mine doesn't. It has a standard Shimano MT55 front wheel and a generic rear (sorry Ian for not knowing what brand your rear wheel is). Both hubs are black.
Different to the pic are the stubby bar ends and kashima stanchions (same lower fork as pic however).

Cheers

Dutchy.

Sorry for the lose mate will keep an eye out.But why is it always people from the Riff or the Druitt why cant you just admit it you have just as many scrumbags up there. You realise the unemployment rate is higher up in the mountains.

Kevin de Brus's picture

Hope you get the bike back, thanks for the insurance reminder too, they are pretty shifty.

The Brown Hornet's picture

It was probably someone coming up from the Hawkesbury! Eye-wink

Dutchy74's picture

Didn't mean to offend DigDig. Stereotypes are a bitch to shake off. Fair call on those in the Blue Mountains too about unemployment and those likely to steal. The Springwood Police did say that they are looking at some local criminals - however what I said about those heading up on the train is still true, so not necessarily wrong assumptions.

Hi all.
I thought I'd send this update through. This afternoon I was contacted by St Marys Police Station about my MTB and they said that they had detained a person who was riding my bike. They asked me to come down to the station to make a statement and recover the bike.

Happy days! The bike is not really damaged but they have removed the stickers off the front forks and replaced the clipless pedals with flats.

The case will go to court, so I'm not going to give specifics to who, or gender of the person. Basically, the Police saw a person riding my bike, which looked completely out of the ordinary (style of MTB and price) and decided to approach said person. Their story did not pan out and they checked the serial number against their records and found it to be stolen - they phoned me... The person has been charged (in lay mans terms) with being in possession of stolen goods and they have a court case next year to plead their innocence.

Can't believe that it's back.

Thanks to the St Marys Police and the fantastic work that they do.

As suprising as it is you have it back in one piece, it great to hear.

Good on the cops for picking it up.

Lucky you just squeezed in the new dale by 2 weeks, nothing wrong with having a few bikes in the stable.Smiling

Dutchy74's picture

Thanks Steve,
He he, I mentioned that to my wife that it was great timing. The new bike is just so much quicker that I really can't see myself riding the Giant unless the new one is out of action. I rode around yellomundie this morning and set a number of PBs on the bike, even though I was just cruising around enjoying the day. Considering I've done a race there, that's pretty good going.

To be honest, I didn't really think that I'd see the bike again, so this is great to see the Police doing a good job.

The Brown Hornet's picture

That is unreal! Go the cops for pro-active police work.

trim's picture

Thanks for the update Dutchy and +1 for the nice police work in getting your bike back!

Chuck's picture

Great news Paul!! Well done to the boys and girls in blue.

ChopStiR's picture

Thats awesome news

Muninjitsu's picture

Good to hear Paul. What happens with the goods though, do you still get to keep it even though insurance (i assume insurance) has paid for a new one?

Dutchy74's picture

Unfortunately Insurance didn't pay for anything. Because the bike was not locked up and in my back yard, the insurance company said they'd pay me $500, and then I'd have to pay $400 excess. On top of that, they would then up my premiums as I had made a claim. So no claim was made and I *lost* $2500 worth of bike...

I think, though, in that circumstance, you still get to keep the money, as the bike was stolen and you made a legitimate claim. It's not then on the insurance company to recover their payout as you may have already bought a replacement item. I'm not sure but I think that's the case if they did pay up.
