New bike choice
Apologies for another 'which bike' thread ...
Seriously considering a new bike. What I'm after is a bike suited to endurance events, nice and light, efficient climber but able to descend well too. I think I am probably a bit more XC than all-mountain but would like to be able to do as much as possible with one bike.
I have been looking at a Giant Reign or Trance (2009 and 2010) but recently had a look at a Scott Genius 30 (2009 model at a heavily discounted price) and was very impressed. I would be really interested in people's thoughts about the Scott in particular (I've already read loads about reign and trance) as it compares to those and other bikes at the price point (let's say $3500 to $4500).
I will be able to test ride the genius at the dam this weekend but no one seems to offer giant test rides (other than around the block). Before laying down this kind of cash I really want to be able to test whichever bike a choose properly first!

You can test ride the Giants from Bike Addiction in North Manly. When I was buying a bike a few months ago they gave me an anthem, trance and reign to have a go on.
I had a test ride on the Scott last year and really like being able to switch the geometry using the rear shock whilst riding. In the end I went with a Giant because of the price and I was worried that it maybe difficult and expensive to repair the rear shock if something went wrong. If you can get one for a good price it would be very tempting, just find out how reliable they are from someone who has got one.
Since you are looking for a do-it-all bike, have you looked at the Ibis Mojo?
It's the lightest 140mm dually on the market, (some builds go below 10kg), and they have the highly efficient DWLink rear pivots. This makes the bike a fantastic climber and an excellent all day XC rig.
Plus they go down hill really well too. Brian Lopes has won DH races on them at Whistler.
Get a build with the 120mm-150mm TALAS fork and you have a true do it all bike.
I think CBD do demos. The SLX build would just about fit in your price range I think.

You like a race oriented bike go the Anthem then Trance then scott spark or Genius try these in that price range then Specialized , Yeti & cannondale .
Go for a new epic, set the brain up properly for your weight and riding style and you'll love it.
Perfect for what you described you need it for.
Or you can look in the classified here, there is a specialized comp that is worth a loooky at. I would have snatched up if it was posted a few days earlier

I noticed Northern Beaches Cycles has a Commencal Meta 4 at a pretty damn good price. A mate of mine rides a Meta 6 and absolutely loves it. A Cannondale Rush SL could be a good option as well.

i have an epic and recently 'borrowed long term' a trance.. I would go the trance as it's more forgiving and for some reason, for me, it's faster.. in fact I LOVE the trance (love the epic too - she was made for sparrow hill) but if you are planning to ride, say red hill it would have to be the giant all the way...
having said that, the boys have put up some nice options - depends on your budget really hey!
