If so, what lubricant do you use for the ratchets? DT Swiss say that normal grease is too thick and that you should use their ‘special grease’ which I understand costs more than $60 for a 20g tub (and is not readily available). Are you aware of any alternatives? Some posts on the web suggest that this grease is actually Dow Corning Molykote TP 42 which I have found can be purchased in Australia, however only in 1kg tins. Seems a waste to buy so much as it would last one bike about 1,000 years. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Anyone interested in sharing in a 1kg tin which costs about $50?

no grease?

I have had those hubs (and the 190's on my road wheels) and never put and grease in them. When it came to service, I would strip them.
In fact, when I buy good hubs, I open them up and fully degrease them and ride it dry.

If you have to use anything, use some thick chain oil. use it really sparingly though.

I have heard of a friend using the super light 'grease' that is used on the axles of model trains - that is supposed to be easy to get in small amounts.

On a sort of unrealated note... you can get an upgrade for some DT hubs that gives better engagement. Read about this the other day:

It is an affordable, easy-to-do upgrade that doubles the points of engagement of your freehub (fits the 190, 240 and 440 FR models). The added benefits also include a small weight reduction and a richer, louder sound to the ratchet mechanism (if you’re into that sort of thing) and ten-degree engagement.

I use Park Tools PolyLube grease in most bike related stuff, and have used it in DT, Mavic, Shimano and Hope hubs for years.
It is an excellent quality grease available in a 4oz tube that will last for ages.

Jensonusa have it - probably around $8-10 per tube.

I recently serviced a friends DT Swiss 240s hub with it and it quietend the ratchet a lot!

FYI: I also use Buzzy's Slick honey for suspension rebuilds and in my cables if I'm expecting ugly weather (like the Jetblack 24hr this year).

I use Slick Honey in my 240's. It keeps it's viscosity under the heat & friction and comes in smaller containers - about 200mL.
