Is it possible to have the blue mountains section on NOBMOB also shown here?

Yes - you can certainly have a trails DB. In fact, the one on NoBMoB is slightly lacking so far as Blue Mountains trails go, so you guys, being locals and all, should really take ownership of that anyhow.

I'll talk to Mog about it and make sure everything is in shape. The only thing to consider of course - is that you are starting out as an advocacy organisation so should bear in mind the locations you want to write up and discuss.

A trails database was raised at various meetings and at this stage we have decided not to include one on BMORC.

If you'd like to update the NobMob database with the few legal firetrails available then feel free.

any questions happy to dicsuss via PM.

Al, I was going to get Rob to link in the nobmob trails database for the blue mountains much like how the CTBMTB has. So this includes the legal trails though is missing a few other small areas that are also legal and worth riding. Also it probably needs some updating and extra information.

So definately not promoting anything that would be illegal.

I've seen and heard the trails database used in a negative context by those against, both inside and outside of the community. I also believe certain stakeholders that we would need to engage are prolly a little more "conservative" in the mountains.

bit early for that IMO

maybe a weather thing instead ... still informative and relevant in an indirect way to specific trails.

Wet: Keep off sniggle
Dry: Noice all round
Out Of Towner Alert: Saturday ... masses expected on all the usual trails ... uhmmmm the Oakes ... and Blaxland Maccas apparently.
Nimby Alert: Spotted stringing up wire and diggin punji pits on St H

Happy to be convinced otherwise ? or can leave it to majority rules ... maybe this is a PM discussion

No was only talking about Rob's current Nobmob type trail database with only the legitimate trails on it like Oaks, Andos, Mt York etc. These are the same rides listed on Fat Hippy or Trailflix and all legit. Flynny has this linked on the CTMTB site as well.

I just want to have it up to add some beef to the site and also to be able to expand on them with some local knowledge. There are also some other short legitimate trails that can be put up that are good rides that are not so well known as well.

@Nerf... am totally confused by your 'Out of Towner Alert' post.

There are already trail status updates available (the traffic lights, which can appear on your front page if you like) which have proved very helpful - simple red/amber/green works well.

I think you are saying that you want a constant, 'Out Of Towner Alert' mention somewhere in certain DB entries (like the Oaks). It's fair enough to make mention in any write up for popular trails, but 'Out Of Towner' sets a tone that you might back fire. The trails are there to share. They are public land and we are privileged to be able to use them. Some might read 'Out Of Towner Alert' as rather arrogant.

Sure, you guys might be locals and might do a lot of work to maintain your local trails (where you are legally allowed to of course), but that should not give you any sort of extra rights or 'ownership' of trails - they are still public property. You might find this view contentious, but have a think about what's going on here: The MTB community is made up of many groups in many areas. We mostly stay on home turf, but from time to time wonder further afield. Isn't it nice to have visitors come along and comment on how nice your trails are? Isn't it nice to visit other areas and try their trails too?

You shouldn't begrudge visitors coming. In fact, you should welcome them because part of the reason councils provide facilities could be to enhance visitation and bring economic benefit: 100 riders buying pies, drinks and filling up at the servo is a nice deal for local businesses.

Sorry to waffle - am not having a go and apologies if this is a lecture. Guess it's another way of saying you just have to be so careful with the advocacy gig, it's hard trying to keep everyone onside all the time!

I took what Nerf said as the "out of towner alert" to do with the business of the trails... the don't ride the Oaks on the weekend if you want a nice and focused solo experience in nature. Still if you want a sociel bit of fun and spider free in summer then the weekend is good. Still I think this sort of info is worth mentioning in some of the reports just as a text in the write-up.

Places like Mt Hay rd should have an out of towner alert or at least a business alert on the weekends because of the 4wds that are allowed to go on there and are dangerous to cyclists if you aren't careful, or Blue Gum at Grose Head gets busy with the walkers and to look out and be nice to them. Still some trails like Narrow Neck may seem a bit out of the way and lonely by oneself if unfamiliar and it is nice to go there at a time knowing when it is busy like every Sunday afternoon so if you get in trouble there is a safety net or at least help the bloodied out of towners with first aid.

So for the blue mountains trails info I find the nobmob reports sometimes a little too much descriptive of how they are on a casual vist rather than as a regular which is what the Fat Hippy really does well. Fat Hippy's reports are a little lacking in photos however which the nobmob one does well at and could be improved to be like some of the Sydney trails in quality.

Rob's picture

OK, fair enough.

To be honest, you cannot assume anything about the audience that reads the trail info so it's best to have it written in as much of a generic manner as possible.

A lot of the write ups on NoBMoB are pretty out of date so if you guys have suggestions as to how they can be improved or re-written then let's do it.

"Out of Towner" as with "Vandal with a Search Engine" was in reference to myself ... and a reflection of the attitudes of some stakeholders ... highlighting, that it might not be a good idea to have a trail data base at this stage.

You'll get used to my waffling, random style ... eventually

Al, I got the muddy trails brouchures to look at the shop. Apparently Council/NP approved

Very well put together though a little disappointing in that it only covers fire trails + the Oaks and Yellowmundi but handy for back packers and the causual rider. I can't see why those types of rides can't be included here.

Residents complaints against "out of towners" is a bit like suggesting the three sisters, Valley of the Waters, Evans lookout, Govets leap etc, etc, etc, out should not be promoted to tourists as they are for locals only.
It's the type of bigoted crap we should not give into.

Every legal ride should be promoted, I know council staff and tourism are all for it.

moggio's picture

Sadly from the meeting when OBR hit the dust the Councillors seemed to be of the attitude of "come up, look at the three sisters, leave some money and then go away". The out of town / tourist riders seemed to be something they didn't like the idea of using our mountains resources as it were. Was very puzzling.

Happy with updating legal tracks ... maybe start with this muddy waters map thingy.

You peeps know betterer then me re the area.

I'm just old and paranoid
