Saw this on Youtube - is it from a NOBMOBer? - The OTB going towards the planter boxes is the stuff of nightmares!

Rob's picture
Nasty dips are beginning to form after some roll-offs, particularly around 19th hole.

Oh, for some proper management at this facility Sad

GiantNut's picture

I have seen a few people come to grief on that rock at the 19th and heard of broken collar bones - I have stopped a few times and tried to put some dirt into that dip but next rain and it's gone.
I guess we can't just go in there with some tools and fix right - we would need council approval? Also a section along the golf course there is like the attack of the triffids and needs trimming back.
I am happy to volunteer.

Those planter boxes just put negative thoughts in your head. It is not a bad roll off but the idea of hitting one of those corners makes me very nervous.

Yes the trail needs some TLC especially tree trimming. I keep scratching my sunglasses every time I ride there. Lucky it's my glasses and not my eyeballs... Can someone organize a trail maintenance day sometime soon?!

Rob's picture

@unicycle... BBwwwaahahahahahaaaaa... "Can someone organize..."

Nice sense of humour you've got there Eye-wink

OK - sorry for the sarcasm, but it's one of those cases where if you don't make light of the situation you'd have to cry. Manly Dam management know the trail needs work. They know riders are keen to help. They allow volunteers to help on other parts of the reserve but won't let riders help with the track. They say that volunteer days will only return if and when the PoM is reviewed and if in that review it is decided volunteer days are actually required.

If you don't like this situation please write to the Mayor and Warringah Councillors and explain your frustration:

Those wooden things are actually steps.

Epic fail for risk management and epic fail for meeting IMBA trail construction standards.

I'm less concerned about the absence of a "B" line than I am that those steps were built in the fall zone where riders are going to land if they come off.

I brought those steps to Rik hart's attention more than 6 months ago and Chris Buckley's response was basically "we're not going to do anything about it. You guys aren't the only trail users."

What they have done is round off the sharp corners. I emailed them back stating thanks, but they actually need to be moved out of the fall zone. I did not receive a reply.

Ive done that 1st stack on the 19th before, got the front wheel caught up. very gracefully i did the splits over the front and landed on my feet. i think i was in more shock than i've i'd crashed.

would it not be a good idea to arrange everyone, all at once, to email the relative persons about maintenance at manly dam-
2 reasons
1- there really is a lot of people that ride the dam and feel quite attached to it so am sure the track maintenance day would deliver heaps of trail fairies
2- if every one emails at the same time it shows an organised united front and the emails become more of a shout than a whisper if they trickle in one by one

i know there's a lot of politics going on, so just a thought!

RE the steps,

All council would need to do something about those steps, is for someone to have a decent fall and break a few bones end up in hospital. Then have their solicitor draft up a letter addressed to council with an intent to sue over the badly constructed and how it does not meet a multi functional trail suitable for both riders and pedestrians. It seems the only thing local councils react to these days is litigation. So sad that it's the case, but so true.

I don't mind them there myself, but it does go through ones head the repercussions of a lapse in judgement.

Cracker of a video too! Love the BH music! Smiling

Wow must have been a very strong gust of wind along the Golf course last night or a Yeti (THE FURRY KIND) because those branches closing in the track have been dealt with. Nice!

Nothing to stop folks from anonymously fixing issues that they see.

Three blokes, a shovel or three, a bit of clay and bush rock or aggregate, a wheelbarrow and Ayups on headbands all round and I reckon you'd be in and out of there in 20 minutes. Could be fun! Laughing out loud

ar_junkie's picture

But I don't think we should be condoning people with "anonymously fixing issues that they see".

I assume you are just refering to maintenance but without context and/or guidance, where do the lines of maintenance and alterations stop/begin?
One person's 'issue' with a section of trail is another person's death trap or challenge. If these anonymous groups altered a bit of track (to their liking) and there was an incident because of the alterations (under the guise of 'maintenance'), what would the future of Manly Dam be wrt. Council and POM's etc. be?

Trust me, I would like nothing more for Manly Dam track maintenance days to be reintroduced, but I don't think we should be encouraging people to go out under the cover of darkness and do their own track work.

If you are walking along one of the walking tracks around the dam and stumble upon a tree branch blocking the track or a boulder that has fallen across the path. Can you move it or is that 'trail building'?

I agree with hawkeye, 20 minutes of ninja fun should fix it.

hawkeye's picture

... I'm getting frustrated with what looks like Council's deliberate inaction.

Fair comments, junkie. However, it's a matter of degree. It's definitely not putting anything new in place, just restoring it to the way it was - ie, minus dip. The question is how to do it properly, and I'm stuck for ideas.

unclebullbar's picture

Glad I leave near Ourimbah.

beroccaboy's picture

suspension compressed ... otb ... i was on a clinic at the time ... the coach said i needed to sit further back and push the front wheel further out ... or with a bit more practice a wheelie of the edge lol ... i just chose the line about two feet to the right instead ...
