"Old Bathurst Road" Closure Sign

This was posted on Rotorburn showing the sign apparently up at Old Bathurst Road.

The council motion that was carried was "That Council closes all downhill mountain bike tracks on the eastern escarpment and adjoining ridges."

This specified downhill mountain bikes yet the sign covers all bikes so no "lighter" bikes or any riding at all in the area.

So what is the extent of the reserve they refer to? Does this mean no bikes on the fire trails etc in the area if they fall within the reserve too?

Strikes me they have gone beyond the definition of the original motion.

For the full council minutes...

"Hi Craig,

The "No bike riding" sign were developed in consultation with Council's Rangers so that the prohibited activity is enforceable. I appreciate the issue you raise and am open to reviewing it, however, in terms of enforcement there is no difference from a down hill bike or cross country bike riding on a closed track. The signs have only been placed at the down hill track that have been closed, and not at any other bike track within the reserve.

I will review the signs and discuss with rider representatives when we meet next on how to best communicate the permissibility or otherwise of particular forms of mountain bike riding.

Further to this, detailed planning on the location of bike tracks, walking tracks and shared tracks within [KR] is yet to be undertaken. It is anticipated that comprehensive signage outlining permissible activities and their locations within the reserve will be carried out. This should go some way to addressing the issue you raise.

Regards"

Follows that it is too hard to differentiate between any given type of bicycle ... so the natural thing for enforcement staff would be to stop all access. Exactly what our resident man in Blue advised us.

So ... as per Rider reps' initial communications and requests, please continue to support our efforts to work with Council, and do not ride at the closed tracks at Old Bathurst Road and Nichols Parade.

Thanks
Al
