proposed canberra trip

We've all talked about it, so now it's time for a show of hands

I'm heading to Canberra on the weekend of Sept 11/ 12 - 5 weeks time
I'm going anyway, but would be good to have others along - especially if you know your way around C'berra

I'm going to post this up on a Canberra website that a mate of mine started up as well - The Berm
So we can get a few locals along who really know the good riding as well as we know ours

Loose idea of what I'm proposing
Arrive early Saturday morning and leave around 1pm to 3pm Sunday
Stay as little or long as you like, but will need a show of hands for booking accommodation
Somewhere cheapish - I've always stayed at the Carotel

In that time we definitely want to ride Majura and Stromlo
We can put a maybe on Sparrow Hill
There might be a local selection that may be better- I'm open to suggestions

Those Canberra trails are begging to be ridden by some hairy mountain goats
So who's in

I'm a maybe (prolly 70:30 yep) at this stage ... I've put it in the calendar ... and will prolly be a day tripper.

Stromlo or Majura is fine with me ... prolly Majura tickles my fancy more for some reason (more trees)

I am a maybe, everything is in a state of flux at the moment, would love to go and have a go at hammerhead!...Stromlo and Majura would be perfect, i am not sure that sparrow will be worth it with the closures of sections!

Just a bit closer
i've never ridden Glenrock or Awaba
And Ourimbah is always good
Al, I see Glenrock is on your to ride list

Maybe C'berra later on

I'll probably be in a for a day trip to Ourimbah.

I got local friends and accomodation for Awaba and Glenrock (which I still need to ride) so I would do that with family in tow.

This is all assuming I will ever get rid of this pneumonia.

Awaba or Glenrock sound good for a day trip. If it's a weekend thing, definitely both are in order, and with both bikes too - if Awaba's on the cards, we definitely need to bring along the big bike Smiling

I'm happy to play guide for Glenrock too. It's been a year or two since I rode there, but it was a regular riding spot for 3 months, so I've got a pretty good idea of how the trail flows in that area.

I'll mention it to the other half and see if she's at all keen.

This is prob better for me
A few people around here too I would like to catch up with
And can prob find a free place to stay

So I'm thinking Ourimbah or Awaba Saturday
And Glenrock Sunday

Those with DH bikes can check out Ourimbah or Awaba DH
While we play XC or give the DH a bash on our XC bikes

Andy,
Won't be there but have been down a few times in the last couple of years. We found the Sth Canberra Motor Park has "Budget Motel Units" for accommodation at about $75 night a double. It is old but clean, has two bedrooms and an ensuite. However, the best part is it is the only caravan park I know that has a pub, and they serve really good steaks( You will have to walk 50m)
Those units aren't on their website so you have to ring. The place is about 15 mins from Stromlo.
Good ride on Sat at Yellomundee but I need more legs

Andy,
we have a holiday house on North Avoca beach, not too far from ourimbah, 30 metres from the main beach, accomodation for 10 people and awesome for a swim after a hard days riding, wont cost a cent either, would be a good weekend, all i need is a little notice!
Todd
Also excellent fishing!

That sounds AWESOME

Can't do this w/e now
Michelle has accepted a new job so we're going on a short holiday as of that weekend

How about early October
Maybe we can take advantage of daylight saving (starts Oct 3)

I'm riding it this saturday so I'll post up my impression.

I suggest awaba before rimbah ... its pretty awesome ... maybe not as varied as rimbah ... but it flows so nice and some of the sections over the bridges and higher speed sniggle turns just makes the climbs well worth the trip ... multiple laps is also much more encouraging then rimbah for some reason.

BOT ... well the OP anyway ... I reckon we still need a trip to the ACT

They've had unusually high rain fall like everywhere else I guess (ie, it seemed a little rutted and wet so I had to ask).

I really really want to go now ... and the 5hrs of driving doesn't seem so bad.

I got an erection while watching the berm track

I'm back from Cressy on 18 Sept
So any weekend after that
Anybody else up for this

That run at Stromolo is awesome... you do have to pay for it by doing the climb up repeatedly however. I think I rode that run nine times one day.. was so rooted by the final run I kept stuffing up and getting off line and had a crash and it really isn't technical at all.

For a northern trip at the end of September, that is when I will be in Melbourne unfortunately (well fortunately in that I will be riding You Yangs and Forest). Still see what dates you guys organise and if I am around will definately hop on board.

I'm pretty keen. Just comes down to the dates. I've got a trip in late sep/early Oct but other than that I'm pretty open.

Belated update

Glenrock was pretty good ... but to get the most out of it you really need a local ... I was lost after the 3rd section and I think we did prolly another 4 or 5 different bits.

The Glen Jacobs bit was pretty good ... if not a little loose (little gravel like rocks on hard pack have the crossmarks on edge and pucker hole puckering). all very classic IMBA like building though which was cool too see in action.

worth the trip if your are heading up there for a weekend maybe ... but not a day trip place unless you have a guide IMO.

I reckon Awaba is easier to follow and makes it a better day tripper

As soon as I get some decent time to ride (after house maintenance & work...) I'll be happy to play guide for Glenrock. I used to ride there a lot, and in summer it's one of my favourite places to ride, due to the sea breezes and the beach at the bottom of the hill!

As soon as I get the aforementioned time, I'll post here and create a ride meeting!
