Saved by a Tree

Today I was the luckiest guy in the world (or at least in the Lower Blue Mountains).

Most of the time when out riding, trees are just obstacles you need to get around while blasting through your favorite trail, but not today. Today a special little tree saved my arse big time.

I went for a quick blast at the local trails ( Lapo and Knapsack). On the way home I thought I take the Zig Zag down to the Lapstone exit and ride up into the bush past that big green water tank. Those of you who were out on the Knapsack ride will know where I mean. Along the way there is some very sketchy skinny pass with a good 5-6 meters on either side, and some very badly placed rocks to negotiate. As I came up to this section, I was thinking to myself, "ride with care here" as I don't wanna go over the edge..... I let you guess what happened next... Yup, I hit a rock which threw my front wheel off to the left and down I went, straight over the edge. In my panic I yelled out "NO!!" and somehow the tree fairies heard me and caught me and the Trance on the way down. On the pics bellow you can see the tiny little tree sticking out the side of the rock that is holding my bike, and a good 5-6 meter drop to the bottom of the gully. I was wedged in between the bike and the tree.

So thank you tree fairies for saving me some serious hurt today. (oh yeah and I haven't told my 7 month prego wife, as I didn't want her freaking out... so please kepp it on the lowdown around her. Thanks)

was just not meant to be.

Have a beer, clean your scratches, hug your wife and enjoy the moment.

And don't think too much about it. Life is just like that.

That's what happens when you ride uphill!

You should just ride DOWNHILL!!!!!!!!!

Holly poo, I've riden along there before a it scares the shit out of me in some spots, I get off and walk, that is a big drop. I usually leave that trail to the bush walker.

I was up Knapsack, Glenbrook myself today but my ride was uneventful.

The Trance is OK isn't it?

That can be a bit nasty through there. Glad you're okay.

Thanks guys for the comments. Luckily not a scratch on either myself or the bike thanks to the tree that caught us. I don't think I'll ever ride through there again..

BTW feel free to share your scary moments on here, I need something to laugh at too. Sticking out tongue

Wow Andrei,
remember on our knapsack ride i said to everybody to be very careful in that spot because of severe drop off on both sides, i have never heard of anybody coming off there so you are first!!!!!..hope everything is o.k.
Later on i want to get a ride bushbash ride going that involves traversing a knifedge ridge that has app. 150 metre drop off both sides, it is the grose head trig ride, this involves climbing/scrambling across the knife edge ridge!!!..you tend to concentrate.
To do this will need planning, it takes about 5/6 hours to do, but what a day, it also involves the steepest fire trail descent in the mountains that goes for a long way, it involves having to stop to cool brakes off!
Will get onto organising!
Todd
