I'm in the market for buying a new hard tail. I would like disc brakes, but apart from that I have a pretty open mind. My budget is around $750-$1000. Can anyone recommend and make a model?

Need some more info,
What kinda of ridding do you want to do or currently do?
How big are you?
How often do you ride?
Do you do your own Repairs?
Etc..
I am a huge fan of anything cromo because it is forgiving and reliable. Yes it is heavier but the benefits far out way the extra pounds.
when talking about the $750 -$1000 range your really talking about bikes that are fairly similar. Most of them will come out of factories in asia, some of them will even come out of the same factory.
The key is to see which shop will give you the best deal on a bike in that range. As long as the parts are robust then it really doesn't matter which one you get (aside from it having that asthetic quality that you like). People will say that brand x is heaps better than brand y, however at this level, there will be very little difference other than a few components.
Go to a few bike shops, tell em how much you have, ask em for the best they have at that price range and then compare what is on offer.
Also, hit em up for a deal on accesories as well, ie, helmet, gloves, lube tubes etc.
I just sold a bike that would of been perfect. Specialized rockhopper. Great bike maybe look into one?
I have a sweet SS Cro-mo Hard Tail for sale that fits your price range:

More bang for your buck than getting something new from an LBS - and a fair bit of street cred too. PM if you would like to know more or have a test ride.
I had a GT hard tail for 9 years, solid to the end, and good price. $1000 would get you a well specc'd one. I'd make sure the fork is of good quality....ie- Fox,Rock Shox.
