Hey, just wondering what to do in a general service. I also wanna clean my drivetrain properly i.e. hubs, chain etc...

Check out the Parktools 'Big Blue Book'. It'll cost a few bucks, but save you a fortune. There are a few MTB books out there, but I can vouch for this one. The 2nd edition was released a while ago.

General service for me consists of.
Removing the casette and cleaning it with degreaser
Removing chain and cleaning with above
Wiping down chainrings
Applying silicon lube to pedals fork stachions rear shock seat rails most moving parts
checking air pressures in fork and shock
cleaning brak rotors with metho
Wash frame
replace cables and outer
Lube chain

Hey spud, interested to know how often you replace your cable outers? I seem to replace mine 2 or three times a year, and the last segment down by the rear derailleur after just about every wet ride, especially on the commuter.

Just wondering whether in your and others' experience this was unusual or not.

(Now that I've gone to Gore Ride On sealed shifter cable system a few months ago I haven't had to touch a thing, so hoping that continues for the rest of the year.)

I drilled out the guides on my Rush and ran a complete outer cable 2 years ago with an xtr inner. I haven't touched it since. Before that I was in the same position as you. No problems with shifting at all. X-7 shifters and an X-9 rear.

I went full cable as well. i usually change the cables just before a big race rather than when i need them. If i didn't do that i would probaly just replace them when i replace the the chain so every 6-8 months

Guys, what do you use for lube to stop the creaking of your rear suspension?? My bikes recently developed a serious creaking issue.

I had a creak that drove me crazy, and after lubing all the shock bushings with high temp bearing grease (that bike was a single pivot driving the shock off the swingarm), it turned out to be the contact points where the saddle rails fit into the saddle.

A couple of drops of chain lube dripped in to the sockets with the bike upside down and ... ahhh, blessed silence! Smiling Was worried it might have been a stress crack somewhere.

On some shocks the oil rushing through the pedal platform valve holes will make a squeaking noise. One of Rob's bikes does this... no big deal just gotta live with it.

Replace all the bearings usually.
The first one to go for me usually is the rear shock bushing{Giant trance}I go through these pretty quick say every 500 kms but my old man makes them for me on his lathe so i don't have to fork out 50 bucks a go. You can test this by lifting your seat one handed gripping the back of the saddle. if there is play they have gone. i agree with other posters though check all the usual stuff first before you go to suspension bearings.

Do you have a Gobi XM saddle? I noticed exactly the same thing. Gobi saddles are great, but can be creaky. I put a wrap of insulation tape on my rails and that fixed it. I like the lube idea.

My mates got the zinn book so ill try borrow that off him and do they things suggested.

Btw how often should i do bearing's?
