After missing the closing time for a ticket, Chris Roe came through with the goods - thanks Chris.

I was hoping for 45min so to get under is great. I had a clean start which is unusual for me and found myself in the front four after the first climb. The group became three at about the 5km mark, and then became 2 at 10km when i got dropped on the last climb not too far from the helipad.

Stuck in no mans land i persevered down the helipad to the gate run. Spinning the nuts off my 39t chainring didnt help, and soon after turning right onto bennetts trail (about 4km to go) a train of 4 caught me. I sat up, recovered and waited for a opportunity to make a break for it. This came on the last hard left bend when a few ran wide in the sandy corner. I managed to keep the gap and find my way through the confusing finish to take out third.

Was really happy to snatch a result given i wasted all my beans soloing it for about 10km. Above 190bpm for the last 25min had me pretty well cross-eyed at the end.

Again...
Well done, - but why the 38T, tell me thats not your biggest front cog???

XX 39/26. today is the only time ive run out of gears (expect when i had 1x9). i tried getting 42/28 rings yesterday but kom wanted $230 for them. i declined given i paid $150 at cbd for the last set not so long ago.

39/11 is almost equivalent to 44/12, which when i had triple rings was fine for pretty much everything except the helipad run where id use the extra one.

where were you today? im keen to see this flash of yours!

I didnt really know much about the whole thing - just kept thinking "too far away - cant be bothered" Then a week out i started getting interested - especially with the huge crew from Nobmob. Ive only done the oaks twice now - both socially, so giving it the full on would have been good fun me thinks now. Anyway - just spent the weekend having a spin around the dam - interesting work done - even a raised boardwalk leading up to the golf course rock. Theyve even put in a 3rd rock at the top of the "double step up" before the trig track.
As for the bike - it's not a flash, its a Scalpel... My new baby.... With the light wheelset it picks up speed so easily (running a custom Stans, DT Swiss, project 321 set up comes in at 1235grams, add a stupid light tyre set up and the total wheelset weight is 2380g - that includes everything cluster, rotors, QR etc) All up the bike comes in at 8.56kg ride away (ie with pedals, GPS, bar ends etc) Thats on the bike shop scales too. Ive got a great photo of my 4yo daughter holding it above her head!
As for comps - havent been a fan of them thus far - i dont have time to train and i tend to be a little competitive. Having said that - ive been entered into a social team for the Scott 24 and im thinking of being a late entrant to the husky. Also looking into my workplace sponsoring a social team for the fling... Could be a busy year - my wife will kill me... Especially if she finds out how much anything with XX costs... That and the fact that she sh!ts herself every time i go for a ride now (im still recovering from my off in January - everything still hurts, just as the Drs said it would...)
Look fwd to catching up one day.
Cheers, Heath

well if your scalpel needs a good flogging in a race, let me know ill be more than happy to assist!
hope to see you out there.

It's amazing how many time i get propositioned for a race... Even have 1 guy asking to race for "pink slips" for a hot lap around the dam...
As for going head to head with you.... When i get a sub 13 on the Booth to Booth... Oh and it will have to be a sprint distance... Im not so good on the enduro stuff yet.
I'd probably prefer to be in the same team as you... as long as i dont have to ride a Scott...
BTW - are you doing the Scott 24?

haaheha!

it seems you thought i wanted to race you. i actually meant if your scalpel ever feels like it needs to be taken out and raced, then id be happy to do that for you!

My bad....
Interesting.... would be interested to see what you think of it compared to the Scott.

i like the 80m travel in the rear. the half travel option on the spark is the best part about it, so id be keen to see what 80mm feels like.
still not sure about that funny looking fork though! although i cant talk with my anorexic dt swiss forks!

Black Flash's picture

With half a fork, you'll be twice as fast! Youre probably aware that you also have the full lock out option for both front and rear too... This is really useful when you happen to be on the black top and feel the need to be infront of the roadie up the road on his Dogma... Man they hate that!
What pedals do you run on the Scott? Mine are Look Quartz Carbons - so different cleets to XTR etc. The frame is also a Med size - i find it handles better than the lifetime of larges ive had up until last year.
I'll probably be out for a quick ride here and there on the weekend - ala Manly Dam, Terrey Hills etc. Let me know if youre doing something similar and i'll try to swing by.
