Hey Guys
Well the sad day came yesterday when I moved from my lovely unit (only a stones throw away from The Dam) to the flat concrete jungle of the Inner West (Leichhardt). I can't be the only one on these forums so looking for any ideas on where I can get off-road and also a good longish (20km) commute loops to the city with some hills thrown in (my commute to Stanmore took all of 5 mins this morning).

Alternatively, if anyone has a trainer they want to get rid of let me know.

Thanks in advance

Surely you jest...

Maybe head over to Centennial Park and give the roadies some curry on your fat-tyred thang for a few laps before heading in to the city. If you want some hills, you could head over to Maroubra Beach and do the climb back out.

I regulaly do laps of Centenial park on my way home, gets a bit boring riding in circles but to spice it up a bit there is an outer off road loop. If you carry on to Coogee and along Arden St to Maroubra as John says, there are a few lung buster hills.

There's always Clover Moores fantastic cycle way along Bourke St!

Hate to say it but living in the inner west the only way to get regular riding is on the road - stating the bleeding obvious I guess. There are bunch training rides at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a weekend ride to Carlingford or Bobbin Head passes through Leichardt a bit after 6 on Saturday mornings. I ride with lidcombe auburn cycling club.

The biggest risk is that you might even start to like it....

Ride to the Dam.

One of my favourite rides is from Five Dock to the dam for two or three laps and back have even done it a few times on Wednesday night Leichardt to the dam would be the same.

For a nice quick training ride head through the city to Centenial park for an hour or so its much nicer traffic wise if you go early.

And your just a 40min drive to Glenbrook for an Oaks up and back.

Heading west from Leichhardt doesn't seem too bike friendly until you get to the Cooks River bike ride. From Lewisham head down Wardell Rd about 2k to the Cooks River then turn left. Can go to Airport/Brighton Le Sands (around 20k around) or on to Kurnell or Cronulla (around 80k around) without being in traffic much at all. Apparently can also get to Waterfall from this ride.

Theres a loop around Iron Cove. Very flat but a bit of fun in Callan and Leichhardt Parks, rock roll downs and a few little dirt jumps here and there. Bike paths head off in all directions around the harbour, the canal and to Olympic Park. All in all pretty lame but a stones throw from you, good for an afternoon blast. Great coffee and cakes in Haberfield too!!

or you could turn right at Cooks River and head through to Homebush Bay. There's always the 4X and BMX tracks there to keep you amused.

However, there's probably a more direct way to Homebush from Leichardt if you scout around.

And ride Tempe velodrome.
Track riding is awesome fun!
And you can eventually impress your friends with your huge quads!!!

As someone who crossed to the dark side this year you need to be careful about these road ride suggestions or you will end up like this

Sorry to say that the inner west ain't replete with off-road rides or big-hill ccommutes. I live in Marrickville and commute to Newtown. Last week I replaced the chainrings on my dual-sus, wanted to find some serious climbs to test the granny, but couldn't find anything more than 50m long. Hmmmm? For me the closest trail is Loftus Oval. You probably know it, but if you want a guide or companion let me know. Train trip from Sydenham to Sutherland or Engadine Station is ok. I'm going for a night ride there on Wednesday 20 July.
