Some mo fo tried to burn Scribblies
Thanks to local riders it's not as bad as it could have been
Only the beginning of the reverse loop is burned, and another small bit

Cillian's account of the events from FB
Went to go for a ride yesterday at the local trail but the local arsonist beat me there so i called 000 and the Firies came no riding got done. Went to go for a ride today at the same trail and the fire investigation guys were there they asked a bunch of questions and then i went for a ride for about 20 mins before i noticed a helicopter ten meters away from my head the chopper then followed me for about 2km no further than 20m away the whole time then a cop car came screaming around the corner and i was made to empty my pockets take off my shoes and walk back to my car where they searched that as well and questioned me for about 30mins.

Apparently the firies have had trouble with someone starting lots of fires around Leura recently
If this mutant is ever caught he'll be chopped into little pieces and used as a berm
And we'll enjoy railing his pea brained head at every opportunity

Has the area been closed off?

Andy Bloot's picture

Never even thought of that
But I'm sure it's OK - was only a small area

You can check here for closures relating to National Parks

Most recent report I heard on the radio is that there have now been 11 seperate fires lit. Police have reactivated there arsonist strike force and will be scrutinising the affected areas for evidence.

Winmalee will be next no doubt, the annual arsonist will pick the next northerly winds, then bingo, sure as the sun rises that an arsonist will pick his mark, luckily winmalee, Faulconbridge point et al have had an amount of backburning done, i know if Winmalee goes, there is a lot of undergrowth to fuel it, up to a metre deep in places!

Good to hear that no one has been hurt so far. I guess we need to invest in a couple of these babies to protect our trails! Eye-wink

But seriously, is there anything that can be done, other than keeping a vigilant eye on things?

We need more riders and walkers out in the bushy areas.

He is bound to slip up sometime and be spotted. Take a camera with you and keep an eye open.

Also if riding be careful and be aware. Also make sure you know of some alternate ways out just in case something does flare up.

I agree with Moggio. The more people we get using these areas responsibly the more passive surviellance there is. I have busted dumpers whilst out on rides, but never an arsonist. I think everyone should take note of people they see entering and leaving areas in high fire season, if a fires starts later on, that info will be invaluable to police. Riders dont' have to worry as you can demonstrate quite clearly "why" you are in the bush.

yeah i remember 2001 in winmalee, the big fires started behind the SAD club, bloke down the road is a cop, they got a call and caught 2 moto riders, unfortunately the fire got out of control, but they caught these 2 pricks, both in early 20's, and one was a firies son!..both got charged but dont know what happened afterwards???

moggio's picture

Well police are questioning two people....

Its warm and windy up here now, I was wondering why there weren't any callouts. perfect conditions and all.... I guess these guys weren't up to their antics.

From the news tonight, they arrested 2 kids. One 19 and one 13 years old. They did say they were only responsible for 1 fire, the rest were started by other arsonists.

Let's see if the traditional school holiday fires get cracking.

It's going to be a busy summer Mog!

Wouldn't like to be the 19yo. With a high fire danger season just about upon us I'd imagine the Aur-thor-rye-ties would be looking to make an example of some one...

according to this article, La Nina is expected to bring us loads more moisture... so maybe who knows...???

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-09-21/la-nina-ex...

BM Epic's picture

Yep La Nina is with us today, geez it was looking dry out here at winmalee, just one spark from a nutter and whoosh, still a lot of undergrowth around that hasnt gone away!

moggio's picture

Yeah JP on Friday I was working at home expecting the beeper to go off at anytime with the warm, dry and windy conditions and was surprised when it hadn't by 2pm and then I saw the news story.

So either these guys did more but they only have evidence for two or the other fire bugs have gone "Oh Shit" and decided to stop for the moment.
