Hi all,
I just received my quicklinks from CRC and now I'm wondering if:
* should I install it now? or wait till I get a broken chain
* If I have to install it now, do I need to remove one link? or just add the new quicklink? It doesn't affect the chain lenght?
Thanks guys!

Install now and you remove one section with the outer plates so you have the narrow bit at each end. I say one section as I don't know if one link refers to a inner and outer together.

You could consider putting two links in so you can remove a section of chain to make it into a single-speed. Broken derailluers are the main reason for having to break a chain on the track. If you have a removeable section you don't need to carry a chain breaker.

Damn clever Mr Zoom

"If you have a removeable section you don't need to carry a chain breaker"?????
What if you bend a link in another part of the chain? You'll still need a chainbreaker to fix it.

Why not make an entire chain out of links and never get caught short!

what brian said is your answer typically. can i ask a further question here...the curves on the edges of a quicklink are different top and bottom...is there a "right-way-up" to install quicklinks. i.e. which curve (the more obtuse or the more acute) goes on the inside of the loop that is your chain?

What are people doing with regards to the new 10 speed chains? SRAM claim their links are not reuseable, are people using KMC or another brand? What about using links with a Shimano directional chain? Have I already asked these questions?

I've been using KMC links in my MTB with Shimano chain and drivetrain with 0 issues. I also run cheap YBN 10sp links in my Road bike with Shimano chain and drivetrain, also with no issues whatsoever.

worth checking the chains and quicklinks made by Wipperman (that's all they do), they're $6 each on CRC...

Brian's picture

Hey Mark, it sounds like you have the wipperman one, they come with instructions as they need to be fitted a particular way.

I like your thinking Pivot Mach 5 - sure would make life easier if the whole damn chain was quick links...

sensai_miagi's picture

nah it's a sram...if you look closely curves top and bottom are different...is there a right way?

Brian's picture

I never noticed it with the sram ones and would fit any which way.

sensai_miagi's picture

i wasn't running sram quicklink, (some other brand i bought from bike addiction, not sure what, don't think it's wipperman though)

while they say they are not reusable, and that's probably for a very good reason, I've reused them every time I take my chain off to clean it with 0 failures to date.... (tempting fate?) you need a tool to get them to compress though.

If your chain is starting to get old or you are about to replace it, I'd put the quick link on the new chain. However if your chain is relatively new then pop the quick link in.
I have always replaced my quick link when I replaced my chain.
I've only ever user the Connex quick links with Shimano XTR/Durace chains and have had zero issues with them. The instructions that come with the quick link are great. Follow them and you cannot go wrong.

Cheers
Evan
