Bad luck and depressing find when cleaning

Giving the bike a good clean after a fun filled weekend riding around Canberra I found this; Luckily I'm a bit anal about cleaning things and took the cranks out to give the chainrings a proper clean - I'm guessing a bad crash was in the near future had I not found these cracks this early.
Weird thing is the cracks are on the top of the swingarm not the bottom; not sure how these formed as the force of my weight should crack from the bottom.
Not looking forward to a couple of months back on the crappy hardtail (its mainly the forks that are the problem actually) while the warrantly is processed and I was told that the is basically no possibility of keeping the same bike (they haven't made them since 2010) - will be given a new frame but I like my bike!
Another problem is that just before I started cleaning the bike I registered us for the Awaba 8hr - luckily I can use the wife's trance and I kept my wheels and saddle so I can just swap them over.
Sad day.

Trying to work out exactly where that is on the bike? Any other photos.
Bummer BTW.

Muninjitsu's picture

Same here, what is the bike/model?

Ian_A's picture

I've got more photos but I don't really want to publish too much negative stuff and identify the brand just in case.
The pic shows the top of the driveside stay just behind the chain rings but the bike is upside down. The crack through the weld is hidden by the middle ring with the cranks in (photo taken with cranks off). The other crack runs from the boss weld for the rear mech cable down.
Edit; another photo.

Bummer Ian. At least it didn't let go under you.

Will try to get up there for a ride in the next few weeks.

That's a curious failure. Can that triangle extend past the limit of the shock if you remove the shock? If not it could be binding up on the rebound and causing the failure.

Hope this makes sense.
Also just thought - could be braking forces too.

trim's picture

At first thought it sure doesn't make sense. Are you doing decent jumps and bottoming out regularly? I'm gonna ask a mech eng at work for his ideas?

Type in your bike with cracked frame in the search and have a read of the mtbr topic on it. Sorry to hear about it.

Ian_A's picture

Yeah unfortunately there seems to be a few cases of the crack around the boss weld and some other swingarm failures but doesn't seem to be any more than other frames.
It gets ridden hard but no more than it is designed for - nothing over 2 foot drops I'd say.
Sucks because I've got used to noone knowing what the bike is and not seeing any others out there - now I'll be on a more run-of-the-mill frame.

If you really like it Ian - might be worth having a chat to GripSport.

That sucks big time Ian
i know how gutted I'd be and can only imagine how you feel
Such a nice bike too and a good brand
Any chance they can get you a Trek as a replacement?
Great bikes and would be at least some compensation for the inconvenience/ depression

Ian_A's picture

Looks like I'll get a Remedy frame as a replacement but with my parts so a 150 rear with 140 fork. Only spoke to the shop mechanic this afternoon when I dropped off the bike so no confirmation on honouring warranty yet. Long process too - prob 2 months.
I'm actually not a big fan of look of the Remedy's but I'm sure it'll ride nice.

Ian_A's picture

Bike's already at the shop for warranty but they are option B if warranty is declined.

Andy Bloot's picture

Can't see how they could decline warranty on that

That sucks Ian, Will the shop/manufacturer give you a loaner/demo for the 8hr?. I am not so sure your chunky front tyre will fit in the trance forks.

I had my cracked Anthem 29er frame replaced less than 24hours from when I reported it to Giant, hopefully you will have a replacement before the race.

Bummer Ian. I know how much you enjoyed that bike. Good luck getting your new ride sorted.

BM Epic's picture

Yeah mate, that is fairly curious, looks like a manufacturing fault, if you want to borrow crappy epic its there for you, rode it today, makes a lot of funny noises but just keeps on keeping on, at least its no cannondale!!

Ian_A's picture

The Trance should be sweet, I'll set it up in the week before and do a bit of riding on it. I've taken off the beach rubber and put a 2.25 Ardent on the front, so it should fit fine. Rear 2.35 might be close but I've got a new 2.1 nevegal sitting around as a spare for my wife so I'll pinch that if I have to.
No chance of a loaner - I didn't even buy the bike off the shop the bike is at, so just dealing with the claim is enough for me.

Ian_A's picture

What are the chances of borrowing the old Epic forks Todd? might need a hand putting them on too. I can come around at some stage.

BM Epic's picture

Yeah thats not a problem mate, the revelations are 130mm travel and adjust down to 85mm, if you want i can get it done soon, probably over the weekend or i can take the fork off and put it on next weekend, what headset size is it going on, this is 1 1/8 steerer??

Andrei74's picture

Nasty crack dude. The Remedy will be a good replacement. Let me know if you want bigger forks. I might be selling my 150mm Revelations. Tapered steerer too.

Username2's picture

That sucks mate!

Option B, i know a very good engineer (retired and works for red wine payments) in Penrith that would (more than likely) be able to fix the issue...

Ian_A's picture

Shop mechanic told me today they found a new/identical frame in America and are having it sent over. ETA about 4 weeks, so with Christmas realistically I'm thinking not until the 2 week of January.
A bit bitter sweet now because I'd looked into the Remedy's and kind of sold myself on that, but I really like the current frame so its a win either way.

bushpilot's picture

Good news that mate, I know how much you enjoyed your bike, the time will pass soon enough and then happy trails as they say.

Ian_A's picture

Well the 4-5 weeks turned into 2 days! Colour is different but I'll get over it.

I haven't gone for a spin yet - just set the suspension, taped up the stays and added frame stickers.
Really looking forward to Awaba 8hr now!
Thanks for the support guys - see you on the trails.........

Looks really nice

Vinno's picture

Good stuff, now I just have to wait for my new rear wheel and my forks to be rebuilt. Rear axle failed on my XT wheelset and getting a new wheel under warranty. Fork started leaking too so I decided to get that done while I wait. Have been riding my old Bear Bike which is over 15kgs with down hill wheels so a little slower up the hills. Been having fun downhill though.

Andy Bloot's picture

If you're keen Vin (and anyone else)
A few of us up at Scribbs tomoz at 9.30
I'll be on my spare bike as well, as I blew a shock seal coupla weeks ago

Bike looks good ian
Nice result
i liked the white, but think I might even like the blue better
Have to see it in person
