My hardtail bike, a Giant XTC2, has some disturbing creaking from the cranks..
It's not the seatpost by the way...

Raceface evolve ISIS crankset and BB. Bike is a few years old now but was a regular weekend rider for 18 months or so.

Few other forums note this is common situation with this set up. The fixes didnt seem very convincing to me...
Plumbers tape on threads, various spacers used, high torque to secure cranks..

Wondered if anyone has experienced this and what they did to fix it. I am preferring a fix at the moment rather than replacement.
I am leaning towards some lube on the splines and re torquing the cranks to the BB. Cant see it being movement in the BB as that would be rather catastrophic to the Aluminium in a short space of time that has passed already. (wont rule it out though)
Any volunteers to help solve the prob? Saturday Arvo?

Thanks
Craig

we were discussing this earlier, the general concenses is it ususally means a bottom bracket/axle issue.. usually resolved by either simply lubing the BB and axled area, the other (happened to me all the time on my hartailz) is a possibly bent BB axle, which will mean replacing it.. although alot of us have had bad creak sounds dissapear with a simple lube up.. either way, if trying to lube it urself is unsuccessful, i would reccomed taking it to a shop, unless you have the tools and know how to do it yourself, as leaving it, and bending it further (if thats what it is) can mean fusing it which = $$!

I had the same problem on my Reign, I sprayed silcone into the bearing areas and the sound went away. two months later I was replacing my chain when I spun the cranks "un-chained" to here a grinding sound?? aplied more lube to the outer bearing case and so far still no failure but I am soon going to buy a new set of crank bearings from the US now the exchange rate is 90-100.
