The wife and I are off to Tasmania for a ten day road trip in a couple of months time and I'm allowed to take my bike Smiling

Has anyone done any rides over there that they could recommend or have any links to websites showing trail maps? The Tassie Trails site seems to be a good place to start but there are very few gps traces.

I spent 2010 in Hobart, Mount Wellington has some good tracks, however, be prepared to do some climbing. The ride to the top is worth the effort, even if it's on tar. The North South track is probably the most well know track on the Mountain, check these links out for further details on trails and MTB parks in and around Hobart:

Hey Pete B

I was in Tassie over the weekend and had the pleasure of riding the North-South track on Mt Wellington in Hobart. I started at the Tolosa St mtb park and went all the way up to the Springs and then back down. It is an unreal ride with some amazing views along the way. I can highly recommend this ride. Also if you are feeling like going quite remote, the trails they follow for the Wild Side MTB is meant to be killer: http://wildsidemtb.com/

Thanks for the replies guys. Hobart area seems to be the main place to ride and as a bonus, there are things for my wife to do while I'm on the bike. I may just hire a bike for a day or two in this case as it doesn't seem worth while lugging my bike round just for a couple of days riding.

Ok, so I'm in Tassie and didn't bring my bike as I thought hiring a bike would be as easy as various websites made out. How wrong I was! I can only find 1 place in the whole of Tasmania that hires proper mountain bikes and they 're In Launceston. Unfortunately we only has one night there so I didn't get a chance to do any riding.

Moral of the story:- if you're going to Tassie and want to ride, take your own bike!

G'day Pete

Not sure if you're still in Tas - but if in Hobart drop in to see John Clingo at Cyclingo in South Hobart - he runs a few guided rides on Mt Wellington and should be able to sort you out with a half decent bike. Otherwise if in Launceston try Sprung - often have demo bikes that you could take for a spin around Kate Read Reserve (around Silverdome) which has heaps of singletrack and a 6HR race this weekend I think
