The one race for rainbow jersey honors was run and won last weekend at Leogang in Austria, in what would prove to be a good course for most Aussie riders, for the flat pedal types maybe not as much, so expectations on Sam hill and troy Brosnan were not so high, although it did have some nice techy sections for riders like Sam and troy to excel, the course really suited strong pedal types who could push hard gears and go big on jumps and also handle the rooty technical steep sections.
One of the great downhill pdeallers ever got up in the form of Greg minnaar, the south african got up over Gee Atherton(thank god), it was a very dissappointing ride for Aaron Gwin, not sure what happened, he didnt stack, his bike was intact at the end, it looked like he just gave up, some stories cited brake failure, but they looked to be working on the way down, so your guess is as good as mine??
For the Aussies it really was a great race, Mick Hannah blasting his way down and coming in 4th, followed in 5th was Sam Hill in a great run on a track that really didnt suit, coming in at 13th was Blue Mountains legend Bryn Atkinson, wow what a solid run, and then one of the only ones to huck off the last rock garden/drop off, most people rolled it, Bryn literally jumped past it!!!, it was a sad end for young gun troy Brosnan, falling on the second corner and dislocating his shoulder, the end of the season cant come quick enough for troy!
In the ladies was a massive upset, the french girl Morgan Charre came from nowhere to put up a perfect run to blow the other ladies away!
Junior Girls was a great result for Penriths Danielle Beecroft with a 3rd place, this bodes well for the future of Australian womens downhill.!
