Hi Guys

An unusual thing happened to me this last week. I was riding my 29er up Red Hill ( unusual I know!) and I broke a spoke on the rear wheel. I've been running tubeless RR's snakeskins. As the spoke broke, the bottom end of the spoke dropped back into the tyre and inadvertently 'punctured' the wheel. It was a long walk home. The ZTR's don't come with a sealed inner case ( inside the wheel) cos of their weight saving properties.

Any ideas on how to prevent this happening again?

Tanks

A question for Greg from TWE.

So - to summarise - the nipple head withdrew into the rim, broke through the yellow tape, creating a hole, and therefore 'puncturing'?

To avoid it happening, you could run a double thickness of yellow tape, but the circumstance you have described and suffered is a very rare occurance. I reckon if you tried your hardest, you couldnt make it happen again.

You got it right....I'm not sure there was any type of 'rim tape' in there actually....

Were you running them tubeless?

I love tubeless, but we are MTB'ing and shit happens.

I'm running these rims on both 26 & 29" bikes. I don't think that there's any way that you can run them tubeless without tape.
I run fairly thin reinforced tape to seal the nipple holes but only a single layer because most tires are tight on these rims as they are.

My advice would be 2 layers of 12mm reinforced (filament) tape or one layer of 12mm reinforced then another layer of yellow, or white tape over the top. I'm sure that you won't puncture that!

Personally, I think that you were just unlucky.

Ride on
