So Im building my dream bike. Got my first dually (Giant Trance carbon) Jan this year. Good bike, loved it, just ended up needing something more All Mountain.

Im posting photos of the parts and builds as i progress:

The link and permissions should be ok for anyone with an facebook account, let me know if not.

I could tell you exactly what Im getting, but its more fun for you this way Sticking out tongue
I could say that this is a "no compromise build", but its not. Everything on it is a compromise between weight and toughness. What I hope to end up with is a light (enough), tough (enough), big travel AM bike that can climb with the breeze and descend like a bomb.
Wether I achieve this or not, one thing is certain. I'm ending up broke.

I agree the prediction is certain! Eye-wink

There was an Ibis HD frame on ebay last weekend.

Were you one of the bidders?

This would have fit your parameters. Light enough, tough enough and expensive enough to send you broke.

bmar560's picture

I think you need more $100 notes in the photos mate Smiling
Love the bling that the bike is gonna have.

MrMez's picture

Had the same CB seat post (smaller dia.) for almost a year without dramas, figured I'd stick with what I know.

Wouldn't buy a frame off eBay, but I guess I should have checked out the mojo Eye-wink

The money is symbolic of the build becoming increasingly expensive, and my cashola going down the drain. Can you see it?????

Fork just arrived. Photo is up Laughing out loud

Why is evrything on face book?

MrMez's picture

I figure everyone has an account and it means I only have to upload to one place?

What is facebook ?

Ditto

Hope you have something stronger on order. Those XTRs won't take much proper abuse

Wait about 5 years and your kids will show you.

Looks like a nice build in progress. It's always fun building a bike from scratch.

One question, does that saint shifter have single or double gear shifting on down shifting?

Also, with that Joplin, make sure you seal up and waterproof the cable end at the seat. I found with mine any wet riding say a few days in a row, would see the cable seize up. I cracked the shits with it eventually and got a RS reverb and it's hydraulic actuation. Best thing I ever did. Smiling

The XTR brakes are great and are an improvement on the 775 series XT brakes, but if you like bombing down you may want at least a 7" rotor on the front.

MrMez's picture

Xtr wheels bad? I hope not. Everything I've read shows them to be particularly durable, and if they are only as good as my xt's ill be thrilled.
It may help that I'm only 65kg Smiling
Maybe if I get another balaclava ill make another "withdrawal" from the bank and get a set of carbon enve wheels.

Muvro: the saint shifter does double down shifts in each direction, and at least triple up. I also got the i-spec so it attaches directly to the xtr brake lever.

I've got the cb seat post without the cable. Just a lever under the seat. My previous one gave zero problems in the ten odd months I had it. I figure it looks neater on the handle bars and less things to break. Either way, I always chean and lube all my hydraulics etc after every ride.

Running a 180 front and 160 rear rotor. The outgoing 785? XT gear was fantastic so I figured saint brakes are way overkill.
Being a 1x10 the saint rd with its short cage is ideal. It's built tough and should get less crud caught in it.

MurrayW's picture

Have you gone for XTR Trail brakes and wheels?
I built my Mach 5.7 up with all XTR with trail wheels and brakes and love them. The XTR shadow plus rear derailleur is awesome, no chain slap.
I also like the wider trail rims.
enjoy your bike.

Mr Oysterhead's picture

I wasnt saying the XTR wheels are bad (no experience with them) but for an 'all mountain' build I would think race rims might not take the abuse an all mountain rig gets very well over a long time. But as you are 65kgs you may get away with it. Id just hate to see the result when casing a lip on a decent jump, doing a decent drop or landing on them sideways. Smiling

MrMez's picture

Have gone with XTR Trail wheels and brakes, so Im guessing they will be good.
Had some short landings and some big hard rock hits with very low pressures on the XT's. Stopped to check the dent and been amazed that I couldn't find any damage and that they stayed true and straight.

muvro's picture

Thanks for that. I currently run the 970 XTR shifter and love the double down shifting action. So when it comes time to do the 10sp conversion, saint is looking like a better option.

I've had a lever action as well, it was actually my first of three Joplins (on different bikes). It was trouble free apart from water getting in through the top seal. But a good packing of grease inside the seal ensures trouble free operation. The lever was good, but once you go to remote, you'll never go back Eye-wink

Yeah, Saint is way overkill for AM unless you are doing massive decents. For instance, 540m decent in 3km travelled was a real test on 775 XT brakes with a 160 on the rear with sintereds, cooked the pads, discs and fluid. lol The 203 on the front was ok, but started getting fade there as well, but saints with 180/160 handled it no probs. As a result, I'll be fitting new XT's with a saint front caliper tomorrow and can't wait.

I reckon the latest XTR trail are awesome! So much better power with better modulation.

bmar560's picture

so what's the frame gonna be MrMez ? or are you going to keep it under wraps til it arrives ?

thshs's picture

Correct me if I'm wrong again. But I seem to recall in one of your previous threads something about an Ibis.

MrMez's picture

Definitely did look at the Mojo, but you will need to wait to see what it is Sticking out tongue

Hopefully be here mid week.

Im going to do most of the build myself. I always like to support multiple LBS' but unfortunately most (all?) of the work/builds I've had done have had issues. Nothing major, but still annoying. Brake cables twisted and coiled, not zip tied to fork, post mounts installed upside down, gears not tuned after service, not being able to fix the problem i took it in for but doing other work without prior approval and charging a ton. /Whinge Eye-wink

MrMez's picture

Got a few new pix.
Just waiting on the frame now.
Because WA.

MrMez's picture

Frame FINALLY arrived.

I can now reveal its an Ibis Mojo HD.

Added some pix to the FB link.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.101513...

More coming when I can get to a computer.

Matt P's picture

Excellent. Would like to swap notes when you have yours built up.

MrMez's picture

More pix added.

Bugger, didn't know I was supposed to take notes Sticking out tongue

Going to take it in today and get them to shorten the brake cables, they're just too long.
Wheels should be delivered some time this week, but still no word of the chain guide.

Hopefully be on the trails this weekend Laughing out loud

Matt P's picture

It's more the shock and rear suspension I'm interested to discuss.

Btw if you fancy an unused RC4 for your HD, let me know.

MrMez's picture

Carbon ENVE wheels just came in Laughing out loud
Far out, the spoke tension is just INSANE!
Added a few pix.

Matt P: May eventually need something like that. Specs, price etc?

Give me a week or 2 to get the bike dialled and I'll be able to give feedback on the rear.
I did test ride a 140mm Mojo, and I can say the suspension design has its quirks, but works VERY well.
No need for any pedal platform unless you are sprinting out of the seat up hills. While not pedalling the rear feels sublime and soaks up everything. When you are pedalling the suspension tightens up and you certainly feel the bumps more, but this also greatly reduces pedal bob. Im expecting the HD to behave much the same.

Matt P's picture

Hi mate,

The RC4 came on the bike so is the right size (8.5" x 2.5"). It's got the kashima coating.

It currently has 500lb spring.

I've put it up on rotorburn for $500 but happy to let it go to a fellow HD owner for $450. Not sure what postage will be. You're in Perth right?

Looking forward to seeing pics of yours when built up.

Mine is actually built but I need to semi dismantle it to put the frame skin on when it arrives. Like you I'm hoping to give it a beasting this weekend!

Cheers

Matt

The end result...

hanky_spanky's picture

What a sexy bike! Now, get out and put some dirt on her.

Matt P's picture

Per above, take her out and give her a good hard spanking.
