hey guys
Is anyone here running these wheels? Thoughts and comments?
I am looking to buy them for use on race day only, but I am 178pounds/81kg, so i am over the weight limit....

I am a similar weight to you, and am actually quite light on wheels. I have tried them and although they stand up (i.e. they havent collapsed under me) they are very very flexy.
a very good female friend of mine rides them (and ironically - if you arent convinced by me - has a set for sale 2nd hand) and she weighs 54kg. She has had no issues with them other than in a crash, she bent one. They have required a bit of tensioning of spokes etc.
I'd be honest and tell you that you would probably go faster (I assume the purpose of the purchase) on a stiffer, but still light set of Crests.
Consider also the tyre choice you make. The Race Golds are about 1320grms. The Crests can be about 1420grms. 50grams at each end. I honestly would say that running the Crests, and one less cup of sealant to keep the weight down, would be a better strategy.
Unless you are desperate - in which case, send me a PM and I'll get you a pair for about $500-$600 (not mine to sell, so am just guessing).
This may not be a factor in your choice but just in case .
The internal rim width of ZTR rims are claimed to be: Race Golds 21.3mm; Crest 21.0; Flow 25.5.
Consider what tire width you intend to run and the evidence that low pressure wider tyres have less rolling resistance than narrower tyres and you may want to factor in rim width in your choice. Putting a wide tyre on a narrow rim changes the shape of the tyre.
I'm using Crests on a HT and now wish I'd gone for wider Flow EX rims for my (slow) style of riding.
As for the weight issue - if you excede the weight and you ride (jumps, rock gardens) hard then it is a risk.
FWIW.

After using my brain i am pretty sure these wheels are going to be too light for me, and i have also been looking into the Crests, cheaper and also not that much heavier, possibly much stiff, so i think i will go with them. I have a AM trek that I use to race so it isnt the lightest bike and i am most certainly not the smoothest rider out there, i have been known to hit all the jumps/make my own on the 50km races i have been doing.
my current wheel set is 1950g, so if i get lighter rims and tires i think i can save plenty.
I'm loving my ZTR Crests.... 29er with Stans and FastTrak Speshy 2012's....I'm 76kg... given these rims a real run over the last 6 months...., they're really really fast and they held up so well to the punishment I've meted out
was a weird feeling when you wind them up and they just keep rollin rollin rollin... its like i had a small flywheel thing going n

I am pretty much sold on the crest rims, but which hubs? the easy option is to go with stans hubs also, but i have also looked at the hope pro II. I am running 15mm through axle on the front and 12/142 on the rear if that makes any difference
thoughts and comments?
Having experienced both Stans 3.30 and Hope Pro 2 hubs I can only say that the Hopes seem to pick up slightly faster than Stans'... but that could be that I have the Stans hubs on a 29er and the hopes were on a 26er.
I have absolutely no complaints with Stans hubs. They are easy to service, rugged enough for what I throw at them, and haven't yet needed any attention other than cleaning and greasing the freehub.
So the only differentiator for me is budget versus bling. If they were $ for $ I'd get Hopes on my next wheeelbuild jsut for the bling.
its a factor for some people but the Hopes are very loud, so. eBay like it. but personally I hate it so have avoided them
I have a fair bit of experience with them both. The Hope hubs are a lot better. They are easier to get spares for (axles, bearings, freehub bodies) and also easier to service. They are a bit heavier, but significantly tougher.
If its a race only wheel, then go Stans. If its a few types of rides, then go Hope.
However, better than both of them are DT Swiss hubs. Maybe a '340' series would cost as much as a Hope set-up? Not sure on prices. 240's are the king of hubs but I think are more than Hope.
FWIW - I have a second set of wheels myself - Hope's with Arch rims - that I train on. The Hope hubs have been rebuilt now with 3 different sets of rims over the last 5 years. I got them as a 9mm QR, and they got changed (very easy - did it at home) to 142x12 about a year ago.
Re the noise of Hopes, just ensure that there is sufficient light grease in the freehub, and they wont be loud.
Personally I like my Hopes noisy. To my mind it sings quality, probably because when I started racing we all lusted after the Bontrager Chris King wheelset (pre Trek and discs) that was generally compared to a swarm of bees, and Hope Ti-glides were the next best thing - I still have a set of these on Mavic 517s that are over 10 years old that I'm still riding.
Also the noise works well to encourage riders and racers to let you past since they can hear every moment you're freewheeling behind them which implies they're slowing you down.
I seem to be doing a lot of freewheeling in my 50km races, i am rather slow to start, so that might help me!!
Thanks for all the thoughts and comments from everyone, very helpful.
I think i have decided to go with the hope or 3.30ti stans hub(if i can get these in 15mm thru axle) and the crest rim, should be pretty sweet!
Hope vs Stan's on ZTR Crest
I've been having the same dilemma. Just to muddy the water a little more Superstar do a light CNC, 3 pawl, 120pt engagement hub for similar $ http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?...
Claim to engage x5 faster than Swiss and Hope and typically like most British components (read Hope) over-engineered. Brilliant.
FWIW I really like the noisy Hope hubs.
