Hi there,

Looking to get a set of cable cutters. Anyone tried either of these?

Or should I just go to bunnings?

That eBay one in particular looks pretty shoddy.

Do yourself a favour and pick up a pair of Park Tool cutters.

I recommend the park tool one

I grabbed a quality pair from bunnings. Absolutely no difference between them and park tools. I have a few park tools things but don't think you need to go with them for cable cutters as they are a hardware specific tool, not just a bike specific tool.

The difference between a generic side-cutter and the cycle specific ones is how they cut the outer housings. A normal side cutter uses a scissor motion and crushes the housing whilst a cycle cutter grips 'around' the housing and tends to crush the housing a lot less. I got a set of Shimano cable cutters 20 yrs ago and they're still going strong

I got this one from bunnings

http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-IRWIN-Vise-Grip-Cable-...

has a small rounded spot for cable, and a second rounded spot for outer sized cable - as opposed to side cutters that have to crush it before cutting it. the irin looks like its designed for things like coaxial cable

As mentioned above side cutters will squash the cable before cutting it, hence not giving it a perfect 'cut'. With the rounded cable cutters, the pressure is shared around the cable giving it a good quality cut.

I've found that a Dremel is better for this purpose than any cable cutter. It makes a perfectly clean cut, with zero deformation or crushing action on the housing at all.

Set RPM to max and it's straight through in 1 or 2 seconds, like a knife through butter. Wear eye protection though as there will be sparks.

Thanks for the replies. So what do you mean by side cutters? Would these from Bunnings be suitable?

Thanks again.

Yep, get the $15 bunnings ones, they have worked great for me, and do a nice clean cut.

+1 for the Dremel. Does things other than cut cables too!
