After getting hooked on big wheels but fancying a bit more spring than my current aluminum frame gives I've decided to take the plunge & go new old school. 853 steel with taper HT & the ability to run Gates belt drive (I also love the colour)

See you out there.

Steel. Love it.

the colour is great too. I will be very interested to see what you think of the ride of the steel frame compared to the alloy one.
I certainly love the smoothing factor of my steel frame.

Truly beautiful. Drool.
i checked out the Pipedream website. Their bikes look great
On the steel bike front, I just built a Cotic Rocket (http://cotic.cc/) that is from 853. It's the very bouncy oposite extreme of my rigid, steel Jones 29er.

HOT!!!!!

Thanks for the nod guys.

My other hard tail here is a 26" Ti Cotic Soda (circa 06) & I've also got an old steel Kona (93?)in Singapore & a long travel, crude but fearless 4130 steel Dialled Bikes Price Albert in the UK.
I've had several other bikes between these but still reckon that steel adds a certain alive personality to a bike, especially a hard tail. Obviously Ti also does this but with a price tag but not the weight.
Build spec is std XT Gs & Bs with Hope/stans wheels & carbon control points.

The only break from norm is a 20mm Maxtle Reba 120 taper fork. This should add to the laidback feel due to the slacker h angle but with the rigidity of the taper & thru axle.

Will post again once I get a feel for it.

Btw, how's the Rocket? I've met Cy a few times & have been blown away by his understanding of materials & angles & genuine will to produce superb riding bikes.

Love the colour, the pricing looks good, and with an XT build and 100mm lefty fork, that would be a real nice race weapon and commuter.

It was Cy's description of the Rocket ride that sold me. Sometimes I love absolutely hammering our (Sydney) sandstone descents, but I also love our technical climbs with rocky step-ups and loose gravel in between. The Rocket suspension system really digs in when we're going up. Love it!
Up and down the GNR it's a joy.

One reason I think I love my Jones....

Tony, the Pipedream looks sweet. And Kermit green with some mud will be even better.

You are spot on about the feel of steel. The 853 Sir 9 is still the nicest feeling frame I've ridden, and looks surprisingly similar in the rear to your new mistress.
