Sadly a cyclist has passed on the M4 today. Spare a prayer for the cyclist, family and friends.

Latest Media Release - Cyclist dies following collision - near Penrith - Penrith LAC - Saturday, 16 February 2013 04:02:21 PM

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding a crash on the M4 this morning where a cyclist died.

Just after 7.30am (Saturday 16 February 2013), a 45-year-old man was riding his bike east in the breakdown lane of the M4 at Emu Plains when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee.

The 23-year-old male driver of the 4WD stopped and called emergency services, however, the cyclist died at the scene.
Officers from Penrith Local Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by the Crash Investigation Unit.

The driver was taken to hospital for treatment of shock and mandatory blood and alcohol testing. His vehicle was also seized for mechanical examination. Investigations into the crash are continuing and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, and hasn’t already provided a statement, to come forward.

This matter is now subject to a report to the Coroner - the matter is subject to investigation by Penrith LAC.

Due to the overall circumstances, it would be appreciated if no additional comment(s) about cause of collision/thoughts as to at fault party etc are made.

Our thoughts are with the family/friends of deceased cyclist, driver of the Jeep vehicle, and others attending/witnessing the incident.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Thoughts go out to the family of the rider killed today. Drove past the accident site this morning, cursing the traffic jam and then feeling sick to the stomach when confronted with the cause.

I've ridden that section of the highway many times with no troubles. It makes you pause and think of what could happen and how quickly things can turn sour.

Stay safe all.

The poor guy was training for an upcoming charity ride - and looks like he was a blue mountains local hailing from Springwood. Vale.

It does make me wonder whether they'll ban or detour bikes from the penrith valley bridge, eastbound there is almost no shoulder to give any margin of safety.

His charity fundraising fund (as well as his wife and two kids) lives on:
