On the ABC's 7:30 program we were just lumped in with 4wd's & Moto's who are causing damage to land near Menai which the local Aboriginal land council wants to develop into 2000+ homes. An opponent of this said "you can see the damage that the 4wd's, Motorbikes & Mountain bikes are causing from coming in here".I just knew that this lady was going to mention MTB after those 2 that were mentioned.I will do some googling & see if the lady can be contacted & get an explanation or reason of her thoughts!!.

LOL - and 2000 homesites???? Hypocrisy of the highest order.

I don't think it will be to much of a problem. South Sydney Off Road Cyclists (SSORC) have been working closely with council and council have been very proactive with the Mtb group including mounthly build days to get trail sustainable, closed and rerouted accordingly.

It is them wanting the project to go ahead purely for the grand old $$.Greenies on one side & a land council looking for $$ on the other! & knowing the general area a place for Moto's,4wd's & illegal rubbish dumpers!-but how did we get lumped in?

Let's be honest.... MTB has done plenty of "damage" out there. In all honesty, it's not that much different from what the motos have done (in fact most of the trails we ride out there were scratched in by motos). We just don't sound horrible, and are less likely to injure a bushwalker or the like.

But yeah - I love how the topic of housing development gets somewhat ignored when discussing environmental damage. If an area is slated for housing development, might as well open it up for trails in the meantime. We're not going to make any more of a mess than the bulldozers!

Nobmobers, don't bother replying. Just someone who joined up in the last hour probably trying to get a few bites. Obviously unable to differentiate between a moto and a MTB.

Cheers

Go to ABC website www.abc.net.au/730/nsw ,the strange thing-is Jenni Gormley from SSEC also the same Jenni Gormley who has a website called PushOn www.pushon.com.au which from what I can see is procycling but more the cycleway/commute type-maybe just a coincidence but contact details on PushOn are in Sutherland!?-was it a chance for a cheap shot at MTB as we are working with Sutherland Council(& using resources) & ANSTO on Menai?

Dont think i'd be particularly worried about that story. MTB was only mentioned once (and it was motorcycles that were used on video), and mentioned by someone who hasnt exactly given the argument she has any intellectual thought. Degraded land is exactly the argument the developers would be putting forward to the state govt to justify it.

Interesting how all of them seem self interested with little recogntiion of competing interests.
