I think the bottom bracket on my commuter is dying... it creaks like a mofo everytime I put pressure on it. I tried tightening it, it will go quiet for 200m and then it will creak again. It is more than 10 years old on a 13 year old steel hardtail.

It's an Octalink old school type bottom bracket.
My question is, can I put external bottom bracket on this bike ? I have a spare one that I can use, I also have a spare SLX crank that I can use.

What measurements should I look at ?

Yes, I think that the thread in the bottom bracket will be the same and I have done that sort of swap before. Don't forget the three spacers for the external bottom bracket, two on the drive side and one on the other.

If you can wait a month or so the frame I've just bought has a newish Octolink 1 BB on it that I'll be stripping off and have no need for. Also check the price for a replacement for your current BB, I've got them for $10 from T7 before. Otherwise an externall BB should work fine, the older bikes are all standard enough with a 68mm thread

Thanks Discodan.

Now I can't find my spare external BB, it's somewhere in the house Sad
If I can't find it within a month I might take up your offer Smiling
