Just got back to the bike after a couple of months away and doing a routine check over before heading out tomorrow. All good bar the seat post which seemed very tight web I tried to raise the saddle a touch. It came out with some effort but the post and the inside of the seat tube look kinda corroded - a bit grey and feels chalky.
Is this normal? Just a result of of the cooling temperatures or some moisture in there? I was going to put a tiny touch of some sort of light grease on the post before reinserting it - unless there are any good recommendations out there?

Always grease posts before you insert, petroleum based is best, water based lubricants are for your other post.
Except if the thing you are inserting your post into is carbon, in which case you use a carbon paste , well unless you are like me, and consider such things as just a little ott.
But, yes they do chalk up if you don't grease.
As Pharmaboy says - use grease. And I'd add that I use carbon assembly compound even on ally post/frames as it cures creaky/slipping post syndrome a treat.
The proper stuff is ridiculously expensive tho' so you could always do what the mechanic at my LBS suggested - chuck a handful of sand in with normal grease
