My trusty old Shimano M087 shoes are nearing the end of their life so I'm wondering what people wear and/or recommend. I'm not stuck on Shimano shoes but they do have to take SPD cleats. My budget is max $200.

I bought some Bontrager RXLs a couple of yaers ago, they're still great to ride in when you want to pound out the kms like I did today.

The stiff carbon sole provides a great platform and no hotspots, but is not so great for hike-a-bike sections though. The bare carbon finish looks great but is exposed to getting scuffed. Mine look very well used, altough still graet structurally.

Got them on special for mid-hundred dollars. Judging by some of the bike specials I saw in the couple of LBSs I visited yesterday, now seems to be a good time of year for negotiating.

I'm an absolute fan of Specialized shoes. Can't kill them. I've had a couple of pairs, have a wide foot and for me they feel good and do the job. I currently race in Sidi and train in my old race shoe which is a Specialized. Without exaggerating they would have done 30,000km or more and will probably still be going in a couple of years.

+1 for Sidi...

The general concensus seams to be Sidi, I'll look into them.

I'm using Specialized Rime more than 2 years now and can't complain a thing. It fits on my wide foot and good for hike a bike.

I been wearing specialized comp for a few years now and they fit perfect for my wide foot and I bought my first brand new pair a month ago

I'm using the same M087's; about 3 years old and starting to think about some new ones. The newer M088's are under $100 most places and if they are as good as the 87's i will be grabbing a pair for sure! They seem to get great write ups everywhere.

Fit is most important .

Generally, shimano come in a wider fit like specialized do, and SIDI are narrower. You can order online for a shoe you know, but everything else really requires a visit to your LBS. I stick with shimano or specialized because I know both fit well in certain models.

Happy with Shimano as the sizing is reliable.
I am currently using road shoes and a pair of mtb086s.
I went to a bike shop to have a look around and it was mostly specialized. I have a L foot 0.5 size longer than my R foot. The service was great, they did my arch types with the thermo pad thingy and I ended up getting the BG Footbeds for my road shoes and couldn't be happier.
For my next pair of mtb shoes I would save up for the specialized shoes as they were a good fit and the wire fastner are much cooler.
Cool

The Shimano sh-m240 can be found online for well under $200. Does anyone know how they compare to Sidi, specialized, etc?

I don't have an especially wide foot so most brands should be ok.

That's on awesome deal, shame the ones in my size are $294

Pete B, I take a 45 in specialized and a 46 in shimano xc - FYI I tested my size at anaconda who stock shimano ( obviously no service at all at anaconda). I wouldn't however go to an lbs to test their shoes

Edit - if u r size 44 in spesh, there is a pair of sworks shoes for $200 I know of
