My son (14 years old)and I are going to do the Careflight fun ride on the weekend. I have brought him a pair of gloves and a under helmet bike cap. We both have a suitable base layer, I am wondering what would be the best amount of cloths to wear? I am trying to convince him to wear my second pair of bike pants under his boardies but he believes they aren't cool enough.
We do not have any bike jersey's we can wear so it will be down to normal cloths. I cannot afford to go out and spend heaps of money on bike cloths for this race. We did complete the convict 50 in 3 hours so I suspect we should warm up if I can get him focused.

Any hints for suitable clothes will be appreciated.

Quick Dry clothing!

Sweat build up can really weigh you down and creates a really uncomfortable ride. It also leads to chafage.

If he doesn't want to wear bike shorts/knicks, you can get quick dry underwear from target for around $12.These are also great to wear under the boardies when swimming.

The boardies are quick dry so you qre covered for shorts.

Target sells the Spalding brand quick dry shirts. Alternatively, Rebel has a big ramge of quick dry clothing.

If you are looking for some extra warmth without cooking yourself, you can get a thermal longsleeved under shirt from camping and motorcycle stores. However these are usually around $50.

The better part of the listed above items is they can be warn for other activities and not just cycling.

Hope this helps.

And expect it to be surprisingly cold at the start
But more like Sydney temps at the end

... the second half or last two thirds are pretty much downhill, meaning you will get sweaty before you hit the winds, might want to take something you can pull on for the downhill - however as mentioned above, the temp will start cool (likely under 10 Celsius) and as the day warms and altitude drops we may even hit 20 by the end of the race.

Might want to check out local weather right before you're heading out:
http://www.wunderground.com/ and search for WF / G'brook - there are a few stations

Personally I'm now 99% Ground Effect when it comes to clothing but I'll 2nd the above mentioned sports tops, I got one from Kmart and it was light and cool and looks good, just a bit smelly which the Ground Effect ones are not, but for $10 or $15- , bargain!

High altitude winter training can be an effective substitute for warm clothing Smiling

9AM predictions are: 4C / feels like 1C with a dew point of -1C

so get dressed as even Glenbrook won't get past 10C by the looks of it

Yeh I have the clothes lined out but weather zone is telling me that it will be 14 to 7deg c so as your site is telling me it will be another 6 deg cooler. I believe I will pack another layer. My son is too busy playing computer games to get ready regardless of my comments. Tommorrow will tell if he is ready or not. Thanks for your updates even if they are bad news .

I will post this site on its own post but for woodford weather I have found this site. Looks like it is a local who host's the site.

I think it's the same station / data as listed here: http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/...

I used to use your original link, but its web UI is flash based and doesn't work on the phone, so I swapped to wundergournd.
