DIY - Fork Repairs

I think I'm bored by all this rain because I just rescued an old pair of forks a mate was chucking and I'm going try and fix them.

They are 2003 Rockshox SID Team (dual air, climb-it control, etc) with a massive 63mm-80mm of travel - I think to change travel from 63mm to 80mm you need to fiddle with the inner workings and therefore a shop service - so these are 63mm.

The first thing I want to do is renew the upper legs. The upper legs measure 130mm but as only 63mm is used, the top 67mm is in poor condition (its like the metallic coating on the legs are peeling).

As the area I'm going to repair in only for cosmetic reason I'm interested in any suggestions on how I could go about it.

but I think you'll have too big an area for that. What about a spray varnish?

got 100mm he never gets to use?

Guys, it's 130mm long not 100mm but only 63mm sees any action, the remaining 67mm is just for show.

The stroke is short but linear and it seems to sag a lot. It also doesn't rebound like I seem to remember. There are no fluid leaks so I haven't blown a seal and it does look old and well used.

The stanchion girth is smaller than current models, so it's not super stiff - reports say it flexes under a heavy load. It has lockout but no blow-off value and my mate said he's never bottomed out, (he's not that daring so I don't know if he's ever jumped anything big).

Now I'll wait for the serious replies.

Nail polish, applied carefully will repair scratches I think a quality varnish would make good to a large area that rarely if never passes through the seals

Sorry Stuart but soon as I saw your name, nail polish and scratches I thought you must have gotten your sites mixed up again.

Don't worry your secret is safe with me girlfriend.

Ah Paul, I feel your pain. Free forks == challenge to fix 'em up, nothing to do with the economics of it.

Although as Pikey says, new set might (will) be cheaper. I put some SID Race on Pratiwi's bike as she's super light and doesn't really need much travel (they were in the 80mm position though). They are very nice and light, were cheap as chips too - T7 had 'em on special. Although I check Spadout and only see 'em around the 500 dollar mark. Hmmmmmmm...

Yeah, so don't give up yet.

FWIW I fixed my frame with nail varnish, works quiet well but not so sure on shocks!
