CrossMax SLR

THis is a bit of a long shot.

Just wondering if anybody can confirm whether a spoke key from a 2006 wheelset will works for a 2014 wheelset on the Crossmax SLR?

Help getting started

Wanting to get a bike to start training for the Gloucester Mountain Man this year.

I am a competitive paddler (k1 and ski), and a runner. I've mountain-biked socially for years but never raced. My current bike is 19yrs old with 23" wheels and no suspension. (it was good in its day Eye-wink )

I am wanting to spend as little as needed to get a bike that will be good enough to train and compete at Gloucester. My running and paddling is up there, so if I can hold my own on a bike I'll do well.

Can I use Avid Rotors with Shimano Brakes?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

On my XC I run Avid Elixir 7's with standard 180/160 rotors
On my Enduro I run Avid Elixir 5's, with 200/180 rotors (upgraded because Im fat bastard).

The braking power I get out of the 7s is far greater than the 5's despite the rotor increase.

If the Elixir 7's were still available I'd simply upgrade however with the current bargains to be found online with Shimano XT I was considering switching brands.

The question is, can I use my Avid HS1 Rotors with Shimano Brakes?

Fun times. This after just 18km on these 26" AM wheels, and I only weigh 64kg.

The video.

Jump at ~1min.

How did it happen?
Top section of Scorpion on the Kalamunda Circuit. If you can call them jumps, landed one a bit nose heavy, and when the rear came down there was a mighty crack.

DIY Carbon Frame Repair

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Small crack in frame and some rather pricey quotes left me thinking that I should just do it myself.

Super easy, just sand it down to existing fibre, slap on some epoxy and a carbon patch. Ideally use a vacuum bag but in lieu of that a freezer bag and duct tape as tight as you can to force that resin in to the fibre and make the patch as compact as possible. Then sand until smooth and paint it.

A few hours worth of tinkering and what looked like a disaster has been sorted at a cost of less than $50 in resin and fibre - yay!

Dropper seatpost and top tube converters

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I've always lugged my 06 Reign around on a towbar mounted rack with a top tube converter. Today I switched out the seatpost for a Giant Contact dropper post - has anyone had any experience with dropper posts being ruined by top tube converters?

I assume the posts work really when used properly, ie, being sat on, but not sure whether they'll go as well being pulled the other way when in transit using a top tube converter.

FYI, I can manually pull the seatpost so it fully extends even when the trigger isn't pressed...there's no locking mechanism to stop it moving upwards.

ESI Racers Edge grips 'throttling'

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I've had a pair of ESI racers edge grips for about 6 months now and I have had to remove them and put them back on a few times. The grips are not worn and have had little use. Just recently I bought a new set of bars and had to remove and put the grips back on for a third time in their lifespan. Now the grips won't 'stick' to the bars like they used to.

I have sprayed silicon inside them like your supposed to but they still won't stick. Any recommendations or is it just time for a new set?

xx1 noise

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I have a creaking noise in my xx1 crankset when under load in low gears (big chain rings). I have only been riding for 9 months so any help would be much appreciated. I have read a lot online but but I was hoping someone may have experienced this problem. Thanks in advanced.

Tubeless valves

Guys any thoughts on the best valves to use for a tubeless rim?
I'm having a hard time sealing the Shimano ones I've put in my new LB rims.
They seem to move around a lot in the hole.
