Noisey Brakes

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Just got some new soft compound rim pads and when I apply them they squeel louder than a pig. Does anyone know the cause and is there a fix?

I can't remember the brand name.

edit: I should add that they are orange in colour if that helps.

CenterLock Disc Rotors with Avid Brakes and installation...

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

After a bit more research.. a few more questions:

Has anybody experience with centerlock disc rotors with Avid brakes? Shimano obviously says use centerlock rotors only with Shimano brakes...
What rotor brand did you use?

I could find Avid rotors on CRC in 185 (Shimano apparently only has 180...).
The only 203 I could find was from Shimano.

Do I need a special tool to install the centerlock rotors? Got the impression but couldn't find any conclusive information.
What is it called? Any shop recommendation?

Thanks
Sascha

First post...yay me Smiling

Being relatively new to MTB, and the world of hyrdaulic disc brakes in particular, I need a word of advice.

Riding to work southwards down the Spit during the week my front brake decided it would be of no apparent use. The back works fine. I tested it once I rolled over the bridge, finding that it did very little to stop me, and barely even slowed me down. They're Tektro Auriga Comp hydros on a Mongoose Amasa Comp.

Brake pad wear

Hi

I'm seeking advice on brake pad wear if I can please as I seem to be wearing through brake pads very quickly! In fact I have just gone through both front and rear pads over 5 rides and about 70km. Most of the riding has been XC style - tracks such as Terrey Hills, Cascades, and one lap of Manly Dam.
Prior to this I went through rear pads and 75% front over 12 rides and about 130km.

So I've found bits for a V-Brake to Caliper conversion for my elcheapo 2nd hand MTB and I need some advice.

The bits I'm missing are:

1. Spokes
2. Brake Cable

My question for the forum is does the quality of the spokes really make any difference? (I bought a hub that has a disc mount and intend to lace it to my existing rims. The hub PCD is different to what I have and I will need to buy spokes.)

Should I get some Elixirs?

I'm interested in upgrading my brakes from Juicy 3s to possibly the new Avid Elixir R. Not being the biggest tech head I was wondering if i could get some advice first.
- Will this be a worthwhile upgrade or should I save my pennies for something better?

I have spotted this set on e-bay for what I consider a decent price ($300AUD inc postage) but am a bit concerned about a few things:

Alcohol Wipes for Disc Brakes

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi there,

Have just started out with a GT avalanche 2.0 recently and been loving some of the trails around Sydney! Have had problems with my back brake recently which saw the caliper replaced. My local bike shop recommended wiping down the discs here and there with Alcohol wipes.

I have two questions:

1: Does anyone do this and is it worth it?
2: Are the wipes I found on ebay below suitable?

Total cost would be $28 including postage, seems OK to me?

Avid Matchmaker

Anyone considering moving their Avid levers/SRAM triggers around (like me - gonna put the brakes inboard) might be interested in this little Avid Matchmaker thing I just noticed. Didn't see it before, perhaps I'm just slow.

No, it's not some kind of super keen cupid, it's a single mount that both Avid Levers and SRAM shifters can hang from. Found a nice picture here on NSMB:

Hmmmm... Ultimate and X0.... Sticking out tongue

You can even hang pop-loc remote switches off these two, as this page shows:
