Cables whats the economical choice?
So I've found bits for a V-Brake to Caliper conversion for my elcheapo 2nd hand MTB and I need some advice.
The bits I'm missing are:
1. Spokes
2. Brake Cable
My question for the forum is does the quality of the spokes really make any difference? (I bought a hub that has a disc mount and intend to lace it to my existing rims. The hub PCD is different to what I have and I will need to buy spokes.)
My other question (more important than above) what's the most economical choice for a brake cable connected to a caliper. What I mean to say is not what is the cheapest but what is the best value for money? Is stainless steal a must have? Is there specific brands I should be buying? Which outer is the shizzle? Do I go to my LBS and say; "I'll have the shimano xxxx brand please"?

I have used DT Swiss Alpine III for ages and they have been flawless.
Bike shops rip you off a $2 ea for plain old spokes.

Hey Nic - thanks for the tips.
I did an epic search last night and came across both of your suggestions. My dilema remains:
1. I can buy 36 spokes with nipples for about $15 or $70 with nipples. Where's the value point? Will an amature MTB rider (me) notice any difference? Are the Ebay ones you've suggested OK for rough stuff?
2. Same as above but with cables. I can buy generic brand for $8, shimano XTR for $40 or something with lots of interesting words for $80. What do people recommend for the best value for money? (BTW - the aligator kit doesn't tell me what it comes with and how long the cables are. Can you help? Do I get enough in one kit to replace all my cable runs, gears included?)

More tips and things than you can possibly use.
Very good, but not the lightest.
Spokes - I'm sure 90% of spoke breakages are because they are not properly tensioned and you get fatigue failure. I'm sure the cheapo spokes will be fine if you look after them.
Ooh. Enough cable inner and outer to do the brakes AND gears?
I bought my spokes and cable last weekend and built up the wheel and installed the 2nd hand brakes.
For the first 10km the Avid mech caliper and hayes 6inch rotor were well under performing and I started to consider changing back to v brakes. Now everything is bedded in they're working great.
I bought standard spokes and an average cable. Thanks for everyone who helped with the decision.
