Todd got me thinking about some stickers ... and I found this free graphic design / logo site

http://www.logoease.com/LogoSamples.aspx?pageno=0

so had a bit of a muck around ... as you can tell I'm an accountant ... well I'm not really an accountant either but pffft.

If you know of a free site with better/more images or something where you can upload jpgs ... post up and let me know.

I was trying to get the Blue Mountains thing ... but it was way too much Blue ... bah ... I have a feeling I may have ripped that off subconsciously ... reminds me of the Blue Cow Ski Resort Logo for some reason

See if you can come up with anything betterer, and post it up

I've been offered free stickers, but only cheap paper
I will find out this week how much to print some good quality ones
Ones you can stick on your car and they last for ages (is that vinyl)
I reckon I could get them at a minimal cost (through work)

And keep it to 2 colours for cost which we could do to the one above

So Al's set the benchmark
Who can raise it

Chuck's picture

Good idea. I was thinking we need a sticker or card as I meet so many locals when out riding. It would be easy just to give them a sticker or card with the web address on it.

I'll chip in if we need a few extra bucks.

So o.k. boys, i run an 8 color printing machine, so you can go all the way with a full 4 color job, as far as stock and which way to go is, well, vinyl paper is definitely strong but expensive and not easy to work with, whereas permanent jac is easy to work with and comes in all types of stock, thick, thin, clear, opaque etc, the main thing though that everybody makes the same mistake with, it is lightfast inks, lightfast inks do not fade!..you will see lots of stickers on cars that were once 4 color and they have lost the yellow, then magenta, then cyan, black does not fade whether it's lightfast or not!..Foil inks also work as well, but are best printed on substrates( vinyl, plastic etc).
My opinion is design a full 4color photo( like our front page), print it on vinyl( this i can probably do...maybe), and then die cut it ourselves( ie: scissors!!!), it is also best printed on opaque ninyl!
Getting vinyl stock is pretty easy, i can get some sample stock for free, it would only be app: 50sheets, but buying a ream of it might cost about 40 bucks..i think!, that would be in sheets of 650+455mm, and a ream of this stock would be 250sheets, running this at 10 out on a sheet would give us 2500 stickers at a cost of 40bucks...this all depends on getting stuff done on the sly at work, calling on favours!
Dont even think about paying to get them printed unless you can go down this track, it will cost about 500 bucks at least, nobody will just print 250 sheets, you will get charged the same as getting 1000 sheets printed, and those little instant print shops like kwik kopy etc will not carry vinyl inks or a 4color machine!
Hope this helps!
Todd

So Todd, by the sounds of it you know a little bit more about this printing stuff that me. So whatever you say or suggest I will go along with. $40 sounds very very reasonable. So we may as well put in a bit of effort to come up with something half decent.

I think what is important is having some clear text that states "Blue Mountains Off Road Cyclists" as well as "www.bmorc.com" and probably some catchphrase... whether we go with "Environmentally Sustainable Recreational Cycling" or not something in that style. That would be enough text.

The question is whether some recognizable logo? Something cycling and maybe Blue Mountains as well....

JP suggested the one with the three sisters a few months back... I mocked it up.

Also Andy and I have been handing out just home printed cards for the last few weeks... I spent 5 minutes to print these up... finding them very useful where you meet someone, hand them a card and most of the time they sign up later that day. I have a Word document that matches up to those blank card things you get from office supplies places if anyone wants to do some themselves, or I can post you a stack if you want.

What do you reckon about the image attacked
I may be able to get something like this re-created
I reckon a good size is W 200mm x H 60mm

I would have the image made to fit this size
I thought go for simple so forget the strarburst and white crap and make it 2 colours
Black for rider, terrain and background- and blue for the mountain behind him

And the black background that is more open will have the name in full in blue
I thought a good strong font like Impact and about 150-170mm wide

The terrain in the foreground RHS will have BMORC in blue and be about 50m wide

How much do you reckon to knock up some of these
And what do you think of the design

Just saw yours mark, so we could add a few more words somewhere if you like
Oh, and web address rather than BMORC

Nerf Herder's picture

I like the idea of the rider in my one ... if you can make it smaller and riding down one of the hills (say the light blue middle one) that would be cool I reckon. Cool

I'd forgotten about Mog's "3 sisters and cog" one ... Lets run with that as a first generation (Although I reckon there needs to be some Blue in there don't you think ... maybe a sky blue instead of red ??). Todd, can I leave that to you to sort with Mog.

Re: Funding ... I'm happy to chip in a 50 for a running kitty on this kinda stuff ... fund for the tip stuff you peeps were talking about previously and other propaganda (website costs that Marks absorbed etc etc). Does anybody want to put their hand up as Chief Money Launderer ... soz I've got a little too many things on at present. (Mog, email or Txt me your bank details please ... so I can help you out with some of the web costs)

FYI ... I'm looking at some cheap Chinnee Tees as well ... but that will take some time ... I don't want to spend more then $10 a piece (including printing) and prefer something more in the $5 range. Cheapest I've found so far is $US7.95, + shipping

A bit lower down my priorities ... so don't get excited yet. Sticking out tongue

I've got a couple other ideas, re design I'm working on ... so feel free to continue putting stuff up

moggio's picture

Ok Al, a dodgy blue version

... and Andy I have asked John whether he has any outakes from our sunset silhouette photo modelling session that could be used for recreating something like the graphic you suggest... something good could be done along those lines... attached is a hideously dodgy modified version... just to get a vague idea.

Was thinking a downhiller silhouette would be good as they look cooler than a XC dude, but really want to keep away from the fullface as it is too easily associated with a moto.. so maybe a XC dude in shorts is the best.

Basically a few more design ideas would be good... we can still do better!!! Smiling

... and Al I like the t-shirt idea.

It's really easy to chop out a rider silhouette... you should go take some nice photos so the rider can be one of you guys. Like we did with NoBMoB. Then take a nice picture or some local scenery, run it through a filter or two to reduce colours, make it stylised how you want, etc. Then combine the two - job done Smiling

I would mention that low, wide logos are best for use on websites and stikkas, square not so good.

I like the idea of stickers, some nice designs. If ya talking about other merchandise to raise funds I like beer coolers, definately buy some of them. A motorbike group I ride with had some made up by a company called Rubber Ratz. Good quatity and mine gets a good workout.

Added another one to the OP ... Missus likes the one without the BMORC ...

I was trying to convert the BMORC into a small bike and then have a stick man on it Mono'ing ... but I'm not that literate in the IT / software / design thingy.

Greg did the other one too with the silhouette

Dad looks very excited about his new bike.

I've used these guys before for artwork. Some of the artist will do work for the community for free. You just need to post what you want and then artist will offer designs.

moggio's picture

Well I think by the looks of it we seem to want

1) a silhouette of mountain biker

2) some mountains

3) it to be rectangular rather than square

4) Have some blue in it for sky

5) Have the text "Blue Mountains Off Road Cyclists" and "www.bmorc.com"

Which leads to the questions

i) what colour the mountains?

ii) Do we want "Environmentally sustainable recreational cycling" on it?

I really like the last one Nerf put up, though it would need some tweaking in that I think the text is too hard to read. Also it would be nice to recreate one like that but with mountains that look more like our mountains, it looks a little to American.

So I will talk to my photographer friend about a silhouette photo... will look through for some mountains pictures too and try a slightly altered version of Nerf's last one.

Still any more ideas please.

Rob's picture

OK, so this picture is from Japan, but you don't have to let on, and it might suit your needs:

http://rainton.com/fun/diary/php/showimage.php?d...

Plus, the photog might even grant you a license to use on a stikka if you ask nice Eye-wink

moggio's picture

That is a lovely photo... I think if I can be a non lazy bugger and get up nice and early and if it stops raining I can get a suitable photo of the valley here that would serve this purpose and be Blue Mountains... maybe not as damn good, but good enough for a sticker. Its that time of year when the valleys are cloud filled and gorgeous.

sponge's picture

For what it is worth guys I like the "Environmentally sustainable recreational cycling" addition to the sticker. Gives it a bit of oomph and portrays a sense of responsibilty and awareness of our sport for which I feel we need to project to the general public and other riders etc.
When we consider the obstacles that we could face in the future, a sensible approach with a small statement like this can really change the opinions that some of the general public or those in a position of power may have towards us.

Seeing these stickers on the back of our vehicles will further advertise the popularity of our sport.

You guys need to be commended for the efforts and considerations that all involved have put into this cause.

Nerf Herder, you mentioned T-shirts, why not give "RIVERS" a try. They sell quality plain cotton T-shirts in colours like white, khaki, blue and black and you can pick them up for about $7-8 over the counter, so you may be able to get them cheaper for a bulk purchase.

Cheers.

Flynny's picture

For t-shirts are are plenty of places that do custom printing.

I've used http://www.customyourshirt.com for club event t shirts.
Good quality and not too expensive just don't expect it to be quick
I've also used them to print logos onto cycling jerseys

a google of "customised t shirt" will bring up a host of others

For custom cycle wear http://www.ridersportswear.com.au/ are the duck nuts

Mark,
I think your black on white sticker design is what i like, except in a different font, i have some cd's full of fonts that we use in the industry, i think it is effective and will be easy to look at on bike frames etc, going with multi color stuff gets a bit how you going, unless you use full 4 color photo's on an opaque white back ground with the type reversed out of the picture, still it is best kept simple, if i cant get it done as a foreign order it will start costing a bomb with color seperations etc.
I will go through some fonts that i have and check on some at work, see if i can come up with something!..I also think it prudent to check on the sticker companies that make up simple font stickers, there is one in penrith and they are very effective looking!
This is just my opinion!

Nerf Herder's picture

I'll look further into it ... Thanks for the links and stuff.

Would be good to have some stickers ASAP ... without being too cryptic (sorry I'm paranoid) ... there is an event coming up that hopefully a lot of you will be attending ... that would be a good opportunity to get some visibility going ... especially given the 2nd report is due around the same time ... lots of out of towners and for a good cause ... to which one of the councillors is connected to.

moggio's picture

I'll be able to put in a bit of time to try and get a design finalised and ordered in the next few days as I am just finishing the project that has been killing me the last few weeks... so should have a little spare time.

Will knock something up and if a few people are satisfied with it go ahead with stickers... need to rpint up more cards to bring tomorrow.

deadparrot's picture

Hey Al,

More then happy to chuck some cash in for the stickers etc, will talk tomorrow.

Cheers

BM Epic's picture

Stickers are now complete, took them to work last night and guillotined them, saves taking the scissors to them, they look good and ready to go!

moggio's picture

Thanks Todd!!!

Bring them for Sunday.. or some of them I got no idea how heavy they are. I will chuck them in my backpack.. I don't care about extra weight as my racing ability will already be very dodgy anyway.

Nerf Herder's picture

Thanks Todd for getting all that done

and Mark for getting all the designs and Shizz happening ... its like herding Nerfs ... uhmmm cats innit Smiling
