When:
Saturday, 17 July, 2010 - 09:00
Duration:
4 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Meeting Point:

Camping / parking area at far end of Mt York Rd. This is also the start of Coxs. From Mt Vic, head west on the hwy for a few minutes, then turn right at the servo (Mt York Rd). Follow this to the end.

150 Mt York Rd, Mt Victoria, NSW
Details:

This is a MT York shuttle day. We should be able to do 3 or 4 laps.

Trail Options

There are 4 trails that head down the escarpment from Mt York Rd: Coxs, Lockyers, Lawsons and Berghoffers. I recommend that we do a couple of laps of Lockyers, then we can try Coxs if we want some variety. The other two aren't generally as good when you have a choice like we do.

Trail Grades/Bike Choice

Of the two, Lockyers is longer, Coxs is steeper.
Best bike for Lockyers is a dual-suspension XC or Trail bike. It's rocky and rough in places, so a hard-tail will be less fun. You don't need a DH bike for this track, and it would be more struggle than it's worth.
Best bike for Coxs would probably be a long-travel Trail bike, as it's rougher and more technical than Lockyers but you still have to ride from the bottom of the track back to the collection point (which is at the bottom of Lockyers). Therefore I would not recommend a DH bike for this track either, although from memory it might be doable.

Bring your lunch, as we will probably still be out when lunch-time comes around.
Bring a good repair kit, as you wouldn't want to sit out for the rest of the day when you get a mechanical on the first lap.

Warning: The ride can be fast with technical sections and a few short climbs. If you go fast, you could hurt yourself.

We'll meet at the the parking area at the end of Mt York Rd. Plan for the first run is to ride the single track back to Lockyers, then down Lockyers. Finish at the picnic ground at the bottom of Lockyers where we meet the driver and trailer (I'll bring a map for the driver).
Then drive back up and do it all again, with variations.

J the B Challenger missions at Mt York I roll the Spark out of the dungeon and across the frost on a run to the bakery for some cross-country shuttle supplies. It's nippy. When you do early morning rides in Blackheath you need some specialised gear: sure I look like an 80's tennis star...

Were you there and have a story to tell?

So who's got a trailer? Now that there is at least 3 of us, are we planning to do shuttle runs? I f yes do we have a trailer, or should we just hire one?

Ian_A's picture

I'm happy for you guys to borrow my 7x4 box trailer if you need it.

Mr Bloot and The Baptist may share a lift
I'll contact you towards the end of the week, Jim

Andrei74's picture

If we gonna borrow the trailer and shuttle, who's vehicle can we use. unfortunately i don't have a tow bar and only a 1.6 no good for towing anyway.

J the B's picture

Alright, we don't have enough people for a mini bus, but we've got 3 trailers on offer: Sponge's mate's, BLKFOZ's, and Flynny's club one.

@Sponge: seeing as you're coming, it might be easier if you get your mate's trailer. A few questions:
- Can you still borrow it?
- How many bikes is it good for?
- Is your car okay to tow it, and can it seat 5 people?
- And how long are you able to be out and about with it?

Isildur's picture

So I'm definitely in for this one! Shuttles ahoy!

We can use my car for towing if need be. It's a 4wd with a proper hitch, so won't have any issues towing a trailer up and down.

Let me know if we need my car for towing duties.

Damn I'm out... found out I required for other services that morning.

Isildur's picture

So, down to 5 at this point eh? I suppose that makes the shuttling a bit easier. Still, the more people the better I reckon Smiling

I've bludged a box trailer which has a bar up front so should be able to hang the bikes over as the downhillers do. Car takes two on the roof.

Ian_A's picture

Well that works out good because my lift up to lithgow has fallen through and I need the trailer to get my bike up there now. If you guys needed the trailer I could have borrowed another box trailer from a mate but would have had to drive to Blacktown to get it.
Have fun.

Looks like you've got the shuttle rig, Sponge. Good one. With the five of us in your car and the bikes in the trailer, we only need to do the driving 1 in 5 runs.

Doubt we'll be getting more than that done anyway.

Don't forget to bring your lunch guys.

And sympathies to those who can't make it (whether through other commitments or broken wings), but I'm sure it's going to be a cracker and we'll get another one organised some time.

Andrei74's picture

Hey guys, is there anyone near Lapstone that would be willing to give me a ride? If not I can drive up there. Cheers.

Andrei

Isildur's picture

Heya guys,
Having never ridden this track, I'm wondering what bike to bring? Is it all doable on a XC/Trail (4"-5") rig? Or is bringing the Glory a better option?

Flynny's picture

Trail bike is perfect.

We do it regularly on XC bikes. Depending on where you start. The Xc from the top of Berghoffers has some steep climbing. Lockyers itself has a lot of flat and a bit of climbing which would negate the glories advantage on the DH bits

Coxes would be fun on the glory, but again we do it on xc bikes so...

I have to work so I'll have to miss the ride

Isildur's picture

Looks like I'll be bringing the M4 then, as I gather we'll be doing a bunch of different trails, and not just Cox's?

Looking forward to it!

/edit: Cheers for the updated Ride Description. Definitely Mach4 territory by the looks of it! If the Glory's needed, I can always bring it next time!

Drat, missed a good one! Hopefully will make it to the next one..
