Come Rain or Shine:
If it's raining, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
The Oaks
Meeting Point:

Glenbrook carpark-opposite train station

Details:

Due to some requests this ride is now happening on Anzac day.
The plan is catch the train to Wentworth Falls, ride the Anderson fire trail back to Woodford, then travel about 4km down the Oaks fire trail & turn off onto the St Helenas track following it all the way back to Glenbrook. Should work out around 60km I hope.
This is mostly fast fire trail with the usual ups & downs you expect in the mountains, until the start of the St Helenas track, I havent riden the St Helenas track so this part will be a bit of an exploration.
This will be a steady paced ride, not flat out but not too slow either, probably stop at the top of the Oaks for a quick feed & refill with water.
Remember to bring plenty of food, water & warm clothes if the weather looks cool.
The train leaves Glenbrook station just after 8:20 so be on the station no later.

Who's in?
No confirmations as yet.
What Happened?

Were you there and have a story to tell?

... and Bruce provides. St Helenas. Nice!! See you there. I'll spread the word and see if I can get a few non-Nobmobbers to come along too.

St Helenas is going to be sweet. Smiling

The train leaves Glenbrook for Woodford at 8:28 a.m. (weekday timetable - did they not used to have a public holiday timetable??) :-} So don't miss it!

If anyone was interested in sharing a lift up, post it here or PM. Or I can bludge a lift for company. Makes the hour car ride better. Let me know.

Ditty they often use Sunday timetables for public holidays but take them for a grain of salt.

The second last ride we did up there the trains ran to there own timetable and the station gaurd said they were ontime. Didn't match either the net timetable or the time Nick was given over the phone the night before.

Have fun and expect sharp unexpected bends on St Helena's, if that makes sense.

Stuart

I am up for that too!
fingers crossed for a wonderful sunny day since it is a "nice weather ride" only Smiling.

See you there,
Carolin

Bruce's picture

the sunday timetable shows the train coming about 5min earlier than the week time table, so if we are ready & on the station by 8.20 we should be covered either way.

evan's picture

Just felt my arm being twisted for this one Smiling

Cya there
Evan

Caro's picture

I think here in Randwick it hasn't stopped since Sunday evening!!
The Blue Mountains weather forecast says showers??? I always thought showers means it stops raining in between??
Fingers crossed for blue sky in the morning Smiling

Little-Ditty's picture

The track will be in pretty poor condition by now. It's not looking good : (

Bruce's picture

Still hoping the rain clears, I think you guys have had alot more rain closer to the coast than we have had way out west.
Am willing to ride as long as its not raining at the time, think the track should be ok if the rain clears by the morning.
Fingers crossed for good weather!

jamie1brown's picture

Hope so anyway.
I rode with some of you guys at Easter so will give this one a go as well. I will probably be on the train that is coming through so will keep an eye out for you at the station.

Caro's picture

Hiya,
absolutely pouring over my way at the moment but the internet says Katoomba hasn't had rain all day? Forecast is clouds and possible shower in the morning....
What do you think?
I really want to go but I really don't want to clean my bike after Smiling

Rob's picture

I've been looking at the radar on and off the last few days. Whenever it's pelting here in Sydney, there's nothing much showing past Penrith, and up at Katoomba (where we're heading - not on this ride) is clear.

It's been said before, that when the rain hits the coast it is clearer inland. Think everyone should be up in the Mtns tomorrow.

Yeah!

P.S. I wrote to BOM about using the radar images to try and make a virtual rain gauge. No reply, but this would be waaaay cool. I could program the site to tell you the rainfall at all the trails in the last few days Smiling

Bruce's picture

Ok,looks like we might be lucky with the weather after looking at the foreast. I will be going to the meeting point regardless & make a choice then.
Hey Jamie would be great if you could make it, if you get my mobile from my profile page you can give me a call or text so we dont miss you. If we dont hear from you we will be getting off the train at wentworth falls, so look out for us, I will be on a black & white specialized. Chances are that if you did the easter ride you probably have met Evan & Liam any way.
Hope to see you all there tomorrow & dont forget the sun screen Smiling

Bruce's picture

weather forecast on the the site for our up coming rides? yes please. 10 out of 10 again Rob.

Carlgroover's picture

Hi everyone I have just joined your site and I live in Woodford. It's not raining here now but it was about 2hrs ago (7.30pm). There is no sign of any stars in the sky so the forecast could be the best bet.
I'll meet you tomorrow for the ride, and I'll be getting on the train at Woodford.
Cheers John
Ps I'll have a white Giant Anthem.

See ya at Glenbrook...

I was speaking with my family this evening, who live in Blackheath. They said it had rained lightly on and off for most of Tuesday. But none of the heavy showers that the Sydney coastline got. Possibly it is the lower Blue Mountains that was escaping the rain. I guess Bruce is right - we get there and make a call at the time.

Carlgroover's picture

Hi, right now there is light rain at Woodford and it doesn't look like stopping.

Rob's picture

Hmmmm... according to the BOM radar there's no rain over any of the MTNS.

There's a webcam at Scenic world though and it's clearly wet there:

Doh!

Hi, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that came out for the ride today. I think we we very lucky with the weather for the most part, the only rain i recall was as we got off the train at wentworth falls & start of the oaks other than that it pretty good.

Was great to meet a few new people also. Shaun can now be added to the list of roid boys after riding up & down every hill several times.

I owe John a massive thanks for supplying me with a new tire after tearing the side wall out of my rear tire, with out you mate my day would not have been so good. also Evan thanks for the temporary repair to get me going.

Well done all,
See you next time
Bruce

That was a great trip to the blueys, glad I joined this ride. Thanks to Bruce for organising it and the rest of the crew for the other suggestions...
John, your son is going to be a champion rider in the not to distant future!

No ride is complete without a good bike lift or two... Power to the hike-a-bike I say! =;o)

Rumour has it that Ditty wants to organise a road ride now... what's with that?
=;o)

Little-Ditty's picture

This was a great ride that turned into more of an epic than I anticipated. Riding from 9:00 until 4:00. Massive. Not having done Andersons or St Helenas, I can now cross those off the list. Nice rides. But damn, those are some hard hike-a-bike yards. Whoever can clear some of those downhill sections without a foot down must be super-human.

Thanks to all for coming along and sharing in the fun. I had a thoroughly enjoyable day. New ride!!

The comment about a road ride is total rubbish and is not to be trusted. The source is compromised. Plus I see Bruce was too scared to post it. Shaun, you have been hanging out with the Goat Boy way too long. Keep that up and you will begin to see spandex as an acceptable form of riding attire. Laughing out loud

Bruce's picture

thought twice about bringing up the topic of your road ride, after seeing the fire in your eyes after a certain tree shaking incident. ha ha

Scared Bruce

Hi there,

thank you everybody for the great day! New track!

Loved the the first 80% of St. Helena but I think I have to join the gym (for years!!) if I ever want to make it through the last bit Smiling?
Special thanks to Shaun for helping me out of the hike a bike section, I don't know how you do it??

Thanks John and Mitchel for playing guide, good luck at Ourimbah!

Well rumour has it that we might see Bruce in pink and Ditty in Lycra soon! Just a rumour??

Great fun!

evan's picture

It was a good fun ride.
Rather cool to see a side wall blow, rather sucky for the rider tho. Luck we had a bike shop owner on our ride who helped out Smiling.

Note to self, remember sun glasses next time Sad. Still cleaning the grit out of my eyes.

Well, 9pm surfing the net and found NoBMoB, and at 9am I've met a bunch of very likeable MTBers and heading out for a great day's riding, cool & misty conditions made Andersons a little more scenic and saved us from over heating on the hill out of there.
We stopped at my house at Woodford to replace the dodgy tire on Bruce's bike, and my son (Mitchell) couldn't get his gear on quick enough to do St. Helenas with us. He soon showed everyone that we weren't going to be waiting around for him to catch up, and rode like his pants were on fire. It'll soon be Dad yelling out, Hey Mitch! Wait up! (and he's still 12 y o).
The hike a bike is a bit long but it's fair payment for the sweet track you've just finished, and remember if it doesn't kill you, it makes you tougher.
Mitchell & I had a ball and we'll see you again soon. Thanks for a great day.

John Evans

Happy to have you and your tearaway son along for a great day out. The misty conditions were helpful, yes? Definitely helped with us not overheating. Don't need to use alot of your water either. Typical Blue Mountains weather. Aaaah, let me reminisce my childhood.

Still not sure about the canyon though. In the back of my mind, the ride up to the escarpment, stop, turn back to the Oaks, and continue on, sounds like to best alternative to me. The uphill ride back to the main trail, over those rocks, would be a great challenge. And it keeps you riding, with less walking. Plus the steep downhill is not really rideable (possible for only the very skilled riders - which is not me). As well as the uphill on the other side. I guess it's just not what I'm used to.

Not sure how often I/we can get up to the Blue Mountains for a ride. Every few months I expect. But if you get down to the north beaches, you are welcome to ride with me anytime. Eye-wink

Carlgroover's picture

I think that would be a better choice especially if you're wanting a longer ride than the Oaks
or St. Helenas on their own.
I'll come to some of the other rides as it's always good to ride different trails and meet like minded people.
I'm also thinking about putting a ride on the calendar taking in the lesser known rides up here in the mid mountains which should be fun.
See ya John.

Bruce's picture

at that intersection mid way down st helenas goes out to a lookout or down to an old farm which might be worth a look, Fat Hippies site makes it sound worth the ride.

That would be tops to see you at some more rides. Also like your idea of showing us around some other trails up in the mountains.

See you next time.
