Details:

I have yet to ride the sniggle+springwood ridge but I'm getting the impression its a little tough. But anyway, I dont imagine it being worse than climbing up bees nest hill.

Plan on riding a figure 8 (Shaws Ridge, Blue Gum swamp, sniggle, springwood ridge, look out, down bees nest hill, BlueGum Swamp)

I have also invited some beginner friends. So pace for this ride will be slow.

Thought I would post it if anyone else would like to join in.

Who's in?
Gilbo, Andy Bloot, Pedalgogy, ChopStiR, grantly, Ian_A, BM Epic, stracho (8 riders)

Were you there and have a story to tell?

Bummer, I'm working Sat. and Sun. otherwise I'd be bang up for this ride.

The singletrack that leads to the fire trail on Springwood Ridge is a little techy for beginners but if they find it too hard they can always walk it. To get to the sniggle from Blue Gum Swamp requires a blat on the road to Halcyon St (with the nursery on the corner).

3rd time lucky.......... my internet keeps losing my posts.

Ill make the effort as this is my local.

I think 2hrs with beginners is pretty optimistic. I usually ride from my house past the fireshed, down whitecross, along Shaws, up Bee's Nest to the lookout, along S/wood ridge, through the single to the nursery and back along Hawkesbury rd to my house. The only stops are a little walk up the last techy bit of Bee's Nest and a quick squiz at the lookout, a moderate pace and just under 1.5hrs.

With 2 runs through Bluegum (which is terrible after rain with 4-5 little creek crossings) I would say 3hrs is more likely.

I'm happy to go with whatever route you choose, but recommend leaving bluegum out if it has been wet. Its a shame because bluegum is growing in quite well, shady, cooler and smooth and is much better than most fireroads (still nowhere near a singletrack though).

Cheers,

Ian

Edit; the little singletrack will be no probs Tim. It is pretty techy, but it is all ridable. Its a little harder going up toward the nursery than going down from the nursery. S/wood ridge is just open firetrail with a couple of little pinch climbs, all easy enough.

I should be able to make this one mate, for the beginners i reckon your on the money, although a good route is as Ian suggested, around shaws, up bees nest, then reverse ghs, although my usual is along ghs to lookout and then reverse, getting single track both ways!..But this sounds pretty cool.
I wont put my name down until i know for sure!

Hey, I've recently moved up to the mountains, not ridden down here before only done the regular oaks and andos trails and some of bloots secret sniggle. Looking forward to charting some new trails.

Good to see some riders coming along, should be a great day. Will be great to have the sniggle start pointed out to me otherwise I would have been just exploring for it. 2hrs was just a number I picked. Last time I was out here was over 6 months ago and we wasted alot of time getting lost taking a wrong turn down an off shoot on shaws ridge. We ended up down the bottom of a valley and then had to climb back out.

Weather Forcast:
Today was showers with a chance of a storm. Haven't seen a storm yet.
Saturday: sunny morning then extreme winds later in the day. Winds to ease by the night.
Sunday: Perfect Riding Day

Im hoping the swamp will be ridable. One of the best bits.

Another option depending on the fitness of your friends is to park at the end of Whitecross, ride back up past the shops, along Hawkesbury rd and enter the single track 1st. Ride S/wood ridge to the lookout then back down Bee's nest and through Bluegum back to the cars. I know you had that in the plan already after the first lap of Shaws/Bluegum.

Just to give you an idea, I can ride Shaws/Bluegum in just over 28min by myself or more like 40 with my mate who just did the 60oddkm Ando's/Oaks last week. So I would allow closer to 50min for that loop alone.

Anyway, Ill meet everyone at the Whitecross carpark at 9:00am and ride whatever is going.

I am planning on riding along the oaks and back starting from my place on Saturday, so a nice slow social ride would be perfect for Sunday.

Been riding the Oaks, Bennets Ridge and Andos for a few years and looking for someone to meet some new people to show me some new rides in the Mountains. I'll be there if you guys will have me!

Of course your welcome Stracho

At the moment It looks like my beginner mates wont be making it. But the ride is still on. Im still keen to do a figure 8, hope this is ok with everyone.

Just looking at the maps, I think we may have taken a different route from what Tim wanted to do. I noticed that the section linking Bluegum and S/wood ridge (which Steven pointed out and Todd called the grotto) is called 'sniggle' on Tim's map and he posted that as part of the ride. Although we would have had to backtrack to do the single track if we did the grotto.

So, sorry if we didn't take the route you wanted Tim. I've never ridden through the grotto although I've looked at the track dozens of times. Next time i'm out there (maybe even this afternoon) ill ride through and see what its like.

The ride throught the grotto is pretty easy. When you actually get to the grotto the trail goes into some almost single track, which is just overgrown fire trail, with a giant Blue Gum fallen across the track. The track goes for another 100 metres or so and you come to a hill which leads up to the back of St. Columbas. The hill is pushing bike up only methinks. The track, which is back to firetrail, ends up at the handball courts. Not as fun as the sniggle off Halcyon.

I might run into you out there today Ian!

ChopStiR's picture

You are correct BLKFOZ, but none the less. It was still good to try something new. Will have to head back out again and do some more exploring.

The TranceX was fantastic, although I seemed to have an unusual creak sound coming from the rear when out of the saddle right foot down. Will be dropping it in for my 1st service soon.

How was the Evo?

BM Epic's picture

Sweet mate, blackmans will sort you out quicksmart, yeah the grotto is overgrown and it is pushing up the hill, which leads you into missing the halcyon single track, what we did is the most common way, fun day it was anyhow, The trance looks good on you Tim!
