Possible location for single track in the Mountains

The Echo came out today and on the front an article about the Lawson golf course sporting grounds proposal, it's gaining steam and a suggestion that it may suit mountain biking. This might suit WSMTBC for an alternate location for racing. I have not been up to the golf course for a while but from memory it would suit a Blue Gum Lodge track style of layout. Just putting it out there..

Steve H submitted suggestions and plans years ago for that site. From memory he suggested a short course XC and 4X track.

That would be a great idea. This area if full of golf courses and they sure take up a hell of a lot of land. Be nice if it was used for playing fields and other sports as well as some mtb?

Are there any more details on how to get involved in supporting this proposal?

It's always a good sign of community acceptance when mountain bikes are mentioned in new projects, would'nt it be a great thing for the mid mountains!

Is the site big enough for a competition XC track?

I'd imagine a crit track... that 1.5km type trail. Still around a golf course you could maybe pull out 4-5km if it were well thought out. Good for regular club race meets and local riding fun.

I thought what was happening here was that the golf course would be removed. I think the golf club closed down years ago. And from memory there is not a lot of flat ground, so it won't suit a lot of sports.

Even though the locals may not like the idea of some of the sports ideas, they may prefer it to the whole site being developed into housing.

Moggio is right, would suit short course out to 4-5k's well that is what I was thinking. Very similar to how Blue gum lodge trail wraps around the grounds although the golf course is much larger.

From google maps to the south where most of the bush is it's got a proposed road a lot number and the bush area is labled South Lawson Park. All up Honour Ave side is a firetrail so it does not look like development of trails would be cutting into National Park or particularly sensitive areas leaving a lot of potential.

Well it already has some cycling heritage as at the top of the golf course is the BMX track, so it already has some facilities, including a carpark etc. So maybe the area could be made into an al-round sports area, with XC MTB on the outskirts of the old golf course and other sports on the other areas.

I think I might email Martin, get some more info and see whether we can get on board in some way and help in pushing for this.

Even beyond the mtb idea, the sports fields etc is just great... I know from parents with kids playing sport just how much travelling they have to do... something the upper mountains is definately short of.

Hey mark if you have steve H's contact it might be worth while emailing him to see if he still has any of the old plans. I spoke to him the other day and he is over the site.

He put in a fair bit of time on it in meetings and site visits and had a bunch of plans drawn up only for the consultants at the time to water them down to something completely unsuitable before submitting them to council.

Not sure what happen to the original round of consultancy but if those guys are out of the way you maybe able to take the plans direct to council.
if you don't have he contacts drop me an email and I'll see what I can chase up

I'm pretty sure I have Steven H's email somewhere and will get on to him.

I guess its a case of if we have WSMTB and BMORC rallying for this part of the project its more numbers behind the thing at the very least. If other groups get involved... power to the people!

This sounds good.

Might want to include ray rice for XC WSMTB when contacting Steve.

Was this one of the sites the councillors suggested for the alternative DH ? and discounted for lack of elevation. Is this near the volvo ? or am I totally off track ...

A flat crit track ... maybe a little longer would be a good start ... thinking ahead for next steps of the discussion paper.

BMCC were considering Lawson tip as a possible DH site which if I remember correctly is near the Golf Course.

Blackheath tip was also considered and would also be a good spot for a crit track. I don't think there are any dibs on that area either.

Blackheath tip is currently being used for the fill that is being removed for the construction of the new "cultural" centre.

Out the back, down the bottom, of the tip area could prove to be a bit of a problem as there is hanging swamp around. Would probably receive complaints similar to those received at [other locations]*.

Have spoken to a guy I know from council previously about Lawson GC, (golf course not general classification) and stated that they were considering using some dams that are in that area to harvest the water from the new roadworks etc so as they could have a large static water supply that could be utilised for aerial bombing of bushfires.Do not know if this eventuated.

Will have a chat to him about it next time I see him.

Years ago an Outlaw Motorcycle Gang had a club house down that way, so having Mountain Bikers and the BMXers should not pose to much of a problem for the locals one would think!

Is the BMX track still down that way?
