I found this on the Dirt Rag site and thought it interesting. This isn't an attempt to start a helmet vs no helmet debate.

Nasty story.... can deal with the injury itself, but the after effects as well are just too much.

What I always think of is how rode around like maniacs when we were kids without helmets and luckily never got injured or knew anyone who got injured.

Makes me shudder, I used to jump staircases etc in schools and many other places on my BMX without a helmet, used to ride to school and mates etc crossing busy roads and car parks too.
I'm with Mark, I was so foolish it's unbelievable, the consequences are huge.

I've got the remains of a nice scar on my forehead from the time my roadie's steerer tube snapped off whilst fishtailing out of the saddle on the dirt in top gear. Woke up with the ambo's oxygen mask and spent the next couple of weeks in a haze. I was 16 at the time. Best bit was getting the gravel scrubbed out of the wound with a scouring pad at Liverpool hospital Evil
