By BM Epic - Posted on 14 January 2012

Note that this ride is Cancelled.
When:
Sunday, 29 January, 2012 (All day)
Duration:
6 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Meeting Point:

Meeting at the corner of Hawkesbury rd and Halcyon Avenue at 8am.
Outside the nursery, do not park in the nursery car park.

3 Halcyon Ave, Winmalee
Details:

Ok, so this is the once in a lifetime ride that very few people have ever done, let alone heard of, the day will include, riding, mountain climbing( with bike over your shoulder ), breif bit of road riding, bit of yellowmundee xc track, a heap of bush bashing etc etc.
I have deliberately kept numbers down for the fact there will be a lot of passing bikes up to each other, and a big group would hinder this, we must ensure that food and heaps of fluid is bought along, i have written 6 hours but it may take longer, so beware!
The ride includes the normal route out to the Grose Head lookout, then there will be some fun single track followed by mountain climbing, beware that this is quite dangerous and accidents could happen, after completing the climb we reach the top of the trig, and what goes up must come down, and descent is what it is, its steep, long, loose and fast, it is breathtaking, when finished we will have a bit of road riding until we reach yellowmundee, then we hit the powerline track until we come upon the bridal trail, then its onto singles ridge road until the torture ends, then when somebody says to you have you done the "trig" ride, give them that knowing smile!!!!
So lets meet at 8am on the 29th and get this thing done, only 2 things can stop us, torrential rain, or more than 36 degrees, i will call it the night before, we will rely on the forecast!
RIDE IS CANCELLED..due to shocking amount of water on the trail!

Who's in?
Gilbo, Andy Bloot, Isildur, Pedalgogy, Chuck, Ian_A, BM Epic, bushpilot (8 riders)
Gilbo Andy Bloot Isildur Pedalgogy Chuck Ian_A BM Epic bushpilot

The quick and the dead hey!

BM Epic's picture

Pm me big fella, we need one more guide!..and you are the person who has done this before!

Pedalgogy's picture

Such is life!

BM Epic's picture

Everybody please ensure your brakes are working 100%, the descent from the trig marker to the fire station starts off steep and stays that way for awhile, on a hot day it will test all brakes!!
If anyone can remember, first aid gear, we are also in snake territory( brownies to be exact), i am bringing 3 litres of fluid in oack, plus an extra sachet of powder to refill with staminade, also watermelon and 2 vegemite and cheese rolls, Gilbo, you bringing snakes??
The climb from the lookout to the trig marker took Jeff and I 1 hour and 50minutes last time out, with 8 people this time it will take a lot longer, it is very dangerous and takes time, but its fun!
Can anybody get some long range forecasting happening?

Muninjitsu's picture

Hey BM do you have GPS coordinates of the track, I wouldnt mind taking a look. I am guessing its the track from the end of Grose Head?

Chuck's picture

I drew it a while back on OSM.

Isildur's picture

Damn you guys! Eye-wink I really miss the mountains!

Wish I could be there, but I reckon my riding fitness is definitely not up to scratch at the moment... too much DH Eye-wink

Enjoy the descent you buggers! Eye-wink

BM Epic's picture

Pm me mate, too much techy riding, not enough climbing practice!

Andy Bloot's picture

Hey Gab
You sold your Mach yet - never too late to change your mind lol
If your fitness is not up to scratch, you'll be on a par with the rest of us

Isildur's picture

The Mach 4 is still around, and there's even a chance of either a 5.7 or Remedy appearing soon Smiling Haha, yeah, but my fitness is really not up to scratch... No XC, no Commuting, just DH runs with pushing up & some shuttles...

Isildur's picture

Got the OK for a leave pass, and if it's alright, count me in!! If 9 is too many, then let me know and I'll wait it out until the next time it comes around...

bushpilot's picture

Hey muninjitsu, If you were thinking of doing this by yourself I'd advise against it, there are sections where you need to pass your bike to someone else and rarely does anyone go there so if you have an accident or snake bite etc you'll be cactus.
I don't intend to be mean, I advise this for your own safety, I've done this ride three times and would not consider going on my own.

BM Epic's picture

Yeah mate, that is the limit, will see you there brother!

Isildur's picture

Scha-weet! Is it worth packing a different pair of shoes for the walk/climb to the top? My cleated shoes don't go so well for walking, let along walking up hill for a long distance...

Andy Bloot's picture

be good good to see you stranger
just bring your regular shoes mate
mine are crap for walking as well
but i'll probably be crawling by that stage

The Brown Hornet's picture

Cycling shoes are fine Gub.

It sounds treacherous but it is a good adventure. A bunch of heavy, sweaty guys hauling their bikes up a slope will give the snakes plenty of notice. All the guys going know how to handle a bike so the downhill should be no probs. In my mind the dangerous bit is the ride from the Yarramundi RFS station to Yellomundee on that stupid Springwood Rd. The speed has been reduced to 80, but in some spots there is no shoulder. She'll be right though!

As BM said, bring some first aid stuff (just in case) and enough liquid and solids to get through. Don't overthink things. A camera to capture the (mis)adventure of the BMORC posse and some of the tops views on offer.

The first time I did this ride/hike over 10 years ago with the old crew from 26 inches I blew up big time at the bottom off Illingsworth at Yellow Rock. Not enough food and Staminade. The next 2 times were sweet.

So as far as i can see with forecasting, it does not look so good for sunday, it is belting down here at winmalee, i am torn between doing this in the rain and doing damage to our bikes and the track, the other says be cautious, we can make another date, the thing that really worries me with wet is the climbing, it will be extremely dangerous and slippery, especially with bikes on shoulders, my instinct says postpone it, but i need everybodies thoughts!

Muninjitsu's picture

In this weather I think to postpone is the wisest decision, it's not worth the risk, wet rock up here becomes very slippery.

The Brown Hornet's picture

Tentative postponement until closer to Sunday, with an update Saturday perhaps? This farking rain is farking farked!

Andy Bloot's picture

Lets monitor until Saturday and call it by Sat night
Damn shame, but I'm good for the following Sunday

BM Epic's picture

Im thinking John-Paul and Andy are right, call to be made saturday, it is sooo wet here!

Isildur's picture

If it's raining up there as much as it is down here, then I reckon a "wait and see" is a good idea. No point doing it in the rain, or after a totally soaked weekend... Keeping my fingers crossed for dry weather up there!

BM Epic's picture

Your right mate, it is very dangerous where the ridge narrows down to about 1 metre wide, anything goes wrong there and it is goodbye!..fingers crossed too mate, but the amount of rain has been terrifying, im not game enough to have a look at the single at halcyon, it will be a quagmire, not to mention the amount of mtb'ers riding it in muddy conditions???

Gilbo's picture

Hey, hows it looking down there today? Forecast for tomorrow from weather.com.au looks promising!
http://www.weather.com.au/nsw/springwood

BM Epic's picture

Hi Lee, we got a big dump yesterday, but overnight had let up, there is a lot of groundwater, Adam F went out and scouyted for us yesterday and said it was evry very wet, his opinion was to postpone, he isnt even on this ride, after yesty arvo's dump i suspect it will be not conducive to a very good day, although the forecast looks good, i think its probablywiser to postpone, also the bridle track and telegraph track will be quagmires, has anybody else got any opinions???

Isildur's picture

If everything is a swamp, then it probably is better to postpone the ride... No point buggering the trails, bike and us when we have the option of waiting...

Just make sure that it's not sometime between the 12th Feb & 4th March, as I'll be in Thailand! Eye-wink Laughing out loud

The Brown Hornet's picture

Postponement would be a good idea. I'm not coming tomorrow so it's up to you guys.

Andy Bloot's picture

Surely the weather will improve by next weekend. Rain up here is crazy. Not too bad in the big smoke today.

BM Epic's picture

just been out there myself, it is terrible, so much running water, and yet some bloke came past riding in the wet, i fronted him and he said he was walking( walking his bike??!! ), even the drainage we put in is overflowing, so lets put the kybosh on this and postpone it!
RIDE IS CANCELLED!

Andy Bloot's picture

That's a pisser. Good call tho Will we make it next weekend.

Chuck's picture

Good call Todd. Just been at Knapsack for soccer registrations and the tracks look wet with lots of water still running.

bushpilot's picture

It wouldn't be a good ride even if it stopped raining from now, so much sodden ground, it's a good idea to call the ride off Todd.
