Its about time for a gearbox, the rear derailer is a hangover from road cycling that can be ditched for a more reliable gearbox system that some companies are tweaking for a lighter better shifting.
Time for a complete makeover for gear shifting on mtbs.
derailieur systems are simple, cheap and easy to maintain.. here forever and my kind of thing.
gearbox systems are complex, somewhat expensive and difficult to maintain, they also are here forever, but not for a simple guy like me.
Obmal, I could not disagree more.
One ruined derailer via a stray stick counts for an expensive gear changing option.
I have 4 mountain bikes, I have perhaps been through 8 derailieurs (including 4 that are on and working 100% as they were made to do), they work (are real simple), dont weigh much and are kinda cheap.
Appart from the next to no maintenance that a gearbox system requires, they don't stack up in price, weight or simplicity in my opinion.
What sort of gearbox system are you chaps referring to? I have a rohloff. Does that count? Or are you talking about the Zerode brand approach?
Since no one really seems to know what these guys are referring to....perhaps a little education is in order.
