Hey guys,

I'm looking at a cross country, dual suspension for under $2500. Almost half my riding will be ON-ROAD.

I will be using it for moderate/difficult fire trails and UP/DOWN bush tracks (no huge drops, no extreme downhill). My main concerns are LIGHTWEIGHT (14kg max) and at least front SUSPENSION LOCK.

Currently considering (all around $2000):
1/ Scott Aspect FX 15 (front & back lock suspension, 13.9kg)
2/ Specialised FSR-XC Comp (highly reccomended by a friend).
3/ Giant Anthem 2 <--- The talk of the town (fantastic front fork, excellent value, propedal)
4/ Mongoose Cannan (12kg., propedal)

- I really want to know if its an advantage going with the mongoose, because its only around 12kg (around 2kg light than some others)? Is 14kg noticably heavy?

- Is there much differency between FULL BACK SUSPENSION LOCK AND PROPEDAL (for on-road I want maximum efficiency - please dont say get a hardtail/road bike)?? If propedal pumped to the highest setting is almost identical to full lock, the im thinking Giant Trance over Scott Aspect? Any ideas????

THANKYOU VERY MUCH!!!
Joel.

Why do you say that?

Are you trying to get an MTB to ride on the weekend and also commute on or do other local trips? From what I hear everywhere else this probably isn't a good plan. Get a decent MTB to ride on the trails and a cheaper scummer or 'comfort bike' for the other stuff.

Or are you saying you have to ride to the trails (good on ya - we are all so guilty of not doing this)? In which case you want a good XC bike which will do you just fine.

Probably all the bikes you list have their merit (I've read good review for the Cannan, riders here have the FSR and Anthem)... try and test ride a few and makes your choice! See you out there! Smiling

By on-road, I mean 10km at least rides on road to work etc.

Thanks

Have you looked at the Giant Trance x1 ? It's lighter than the Anthem bikes.

I created a long thread about it here and ended up purchasing it Smiling

I just bought the 2008 specialized stumpy comp and its an amazing bike. Its light and absolutely flies up the hills with very little effort. I am a reasonably unfit person and I have amazed myself at the hills I have been able to ride up. I have found the propedal to really help me when I am climbing dodgy terrain. And its got enough travel to really soak up any big hits on the trail. In my opinion its a perfect all round bike, goes up and down the hills equally as well. And it looks gorgeous. What more could you ask for? BTW the specialized is around 12.5kg. So not much heavier than the mongoose.

Cheers for all your advice guys!!

Just bought a Giant Trance 2. Nice and reasonably lightweight with 4.2 inches of travel and awesome brakes. It has a flat tyre already! ... but apart from that I couldn't be happier.
