I broke the valve of my rear wheel so I went and got a tubeless valve (dear those small things!). But when I was about to replace the broken one, I was horrified to discover that my Trance X1 with TUBELESS tires has tubes inside..... what is going on there ? Is that something normal Giant does to all new bikes ?

Now I can't even pump it up tubeless, the seal doesn't seem tight enough around the rim. What should I do ? Sad

Don't think it's a Giant thing, or maybe it is. The Rush came with UST tires on the rims with Stans inside, good to go. Maybe it's a bike shop thing as to if they want to set you up that way to begin. Make sure your tires are real USTs if you've taken the tube out!

You will definitely need Stans/Slime in the tire or you'll be lucky to get a reliable seal. Even then I sometimes have troubles getting it to seal from flat. You need to get the air in real fast, sometimes pumping like hell with a floor pump works, otherwise take it to a servo with an old style air line to get the pressure you need.

Seems to work better with new tires, make sure you clean any dirt/old gu from the bead/rim to get a nice seal.

Shipping tubeless wheels with tubes in the tyres is fairly standard for bike manufacturers (as you've discovered it can be a little tricky to get tubeless to work)

Some tyre rim combinations are easy (mavic/Maxxis has always worked for me without any difficulty). You don't need any goop (Stans etc) but it does help, but you still need to get the bead to seat first. The trick is to wet the bead with soapy water first and then pump like hell with a floor pump.

There's a good description on Stan's website on mounting tubeless tyres http://www.notubes.com/support_detailed.php

They are not real UST the Michelin XCR AT. So you think I should just get an inner tube ? But wait I'm going to take this $25 valve back and get my money back (I have a good reason don't I ?!).
Actually I will take my 2 wheels in tomorrow first thing to clear this out...

But jeez they were running well, never losing air and I thought that was thanks to tubeless....

Looks like you have Mavic 317 rims. All out of luck there for running tubeless without some modifications. Only way as said is to get some tubeless conversion kits such as Stan's No Tubes.

...charged you $25 for a valve? absolutely crazy price. Halve it and you might be in the right range.

I thought it was a bit excessive, it's a Mavic one. But yeah it's AUD$14 on jensonsusa anyway I'm taking it back tomorrow Smiling

On my trance X1 when I went to replace the tires that came on the bike. I just left the tubes in (my replacement tires are tubeless). As a previous post said the 317 rims need converting if you want to run tubeless.

they said it needs tape inside so in the end I didn't bother about it and got an inner tube and the difference with the dear valve.

thanks for the tips though Smiling
