Well it's only been a few weeks since our mudfest drivetrain destroying nightride and one again this one will end up being expensive.

Turns out the disc was rubbing the caliper because the whole axle was bent when Tien used it as a seat.

Any ideas how much a Crossmax axle will cost!? Sad

Do you mean the skewer (few bucks) or hub (100 at least plus 50 for the wheel rebuild).

Buck's picture

Nah the skewer is fine but the axle through the hub (the hollow bit where the skewer goes through) is bent on the left hand side.

I fell to my left so I assume Tien sat on the lower half of the wheel, pushing the axle up into the left fork dropout and bending it.

Hopefully they can just replace the axle like on other hubs.

So tip for young players......don't ride too close to Tien Laughing out loud

it should only be about $15.

I did the same to my when I had that unfortunate, ok classic, OTB at Sparrow Hill last year.

Is it just a hollow tube for the skewer to pass through that is also threaded on the outside?

I don't think that explains the "wobble" that your wheel also had, does it need trueing as well?

Buck's picture

Yep the wheel has had a quick true also. They did this as part of my 1 yrs free servicing. However I'm sure they will have to true it again properly once they get a new axle in as they only did a quick rough job in the fork while I was in the shop.

Unforunately the axle won't be free. But yes that is the part Stuart. It's the ends of the axle which sit into the fork dropout which is bent.

be the best person to find out about parts for you as the local 'dealer' (not to mention his part in the stack...)

Buck's picture

Well Tien has the exact same wheel on his bike actually.

Maybe we should just do a wheel swap Sticking out tongue

So I'd at least double that price.

ADRIAN B's picture

guys i just made a call for you the axel is about $65.00 and there will be a wait as they dont have any in stock. cheers adrian

Buck's picture

Thanks Adrian for the info.

Well looks like I'll be riding on the crappy front wheel from my Alias for a while then!

And $65 for a hollow metal pipe! Far out. Shocked

..... Just waiting for Tien to pipe up and join in Sticking out tongue

out of curiosity, is it the same thread and diameter as the shimano ones?

Loz, I hope you're sending someone your business for service like that!!

My bike didn't get sat on?

its all ok! Laughing out loud

*touch wood*

ADRIAN B's picture

the shimano axle is threaded the whole way along the axel, the mavic ones are alloy to start with and are a sealed hub so it has a step in both sides of the axle so the bearing can sit on it, cheers adrian.

"My bike didn't get sat on?

Confused you with "Ben" or are you Lorrie?

Thanks for the reply Adrain, had a cheapskate thought was all.
