For all those mtb commuters I am having some difficulty deciding the best path to take. I am looking are starting to commute the 14km from Balgowlah to Work in the city but don’t know the best option to take.

I have a giant trance 1 07 model for the commute but don't have a spare wheelset to throw slicks on for a quick change over between mtb tyres and slicks. I also don’t have the space for a dedicated commuter.

Can anyone recommend a good wheelset I could purchase that would do the trick so I could quickly swap them over rather then changing tires 3 times a week (within reasonable price)? Or should I just purchase a tyre that can handle both commuting and mtbing like crossmax or any other suggestions?

I appreciate any advice cheers

.... and it really does wear the rear tyre quite quickly, although the front still lasts for ages. So I would say the cheapest options are:
1) Just look for specials on tyres like the Maxxis Crossmark's which appear from time to time for under $40 and buy a few at a time. If you go through an extra 2 or 3 a year, I wouldn't think it will break the bank.
2) Look at www.bike24.com and order a heap of tyres and other stuff. They charge a fixed delivery fee of Euro 20 regardless of size or weight. The prices you see initially will include VAT or 16%, but once you go to the checkout and change your destination to Australia, it will knock a further 16% of the prices. I paid about Aussie $50 for Schwalbe Racing Ralph's and they are $110 at CBD. Just get a bunch of mates in to share the delivery charge.
3) Try pick up JUST A REAR WHEEL to run a slick on. You will look like a complete knob, but really, I go through between 3 and 4 rear tyres for every front tyre so if minimising cost is the objective then it makes sense.

Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth.

... and about as puncture proof. Sticking out tongue

Serfas baristas in 26 x 1.25 or Continental Sport Contact in 26 x 1.3 are the go. The conti's are a PITA to get off or on, the Baristas are much better but not quite as fast. Both have quite effective antipuncture belts. Haven't had a penetration puncture with either of them.

I lucked upon a set of discs-and-all Mavic Open Pro 700c wheels on fleabay that are a straight bolt on for my Cannondale F1000. With Conti GP4000s 700 x 23c with Black Chili compound fitted, it just fliiiiiies haha Laughing out loud

chi11c are you having a crisis? or are you having a booze skulling comp against yourself and winning?

You seem not to be able to decide who you are... not to mention searching for slick tyres for Mildred. Does this mean a certain somebody will be pseudo scumming?

too funny....

christine's picture

just because I am enquiring about slicks for Mildred doesn't actually amount to anything - ANd, whatsmore..if Christine should be kind enough to let someone ask about slicks on the site under her name why would that mean that anyone was going pseudo scumming?

Lets be clear my dear- scumming isn't 'real riding' at all and blondie, christine, chi11c or anyone else using Christines login won't be doing it...anytime soon....
