Planning on catching a train to Woodford and riding down the Oaks tomorrow morning. I've just read on fb the firetrail has just been graded. Does anyone know the area of affect?

Its the great sandy desert from iron barks to the oaks gate, coming down the single track you will miss it.
I don't know what they are thinking, twice in around 1 year they have done this but it doesn't improve the road at all. It's a hard slog all the way up to the gate.
Mt Portal was done as well.

Talking about making things worse while trying to fix them, the Gosford Council/local NPWS resurfaced a number of fire trails over the last 18 months or so (in and around the Central Coast) with baby head sandstone, made perfectly good riding into a real challenge in some sections.

Has this happened anywhere else?

I've noticed it around the northern beaches as well. I guess they don't wash away as easily.

I don't mind it so much when they use it on areas that have a history of not draining so well but they make it hard on steep climbs and sketchy on descents.

Not sure what Baby head sandstone looks like but a steep track at Woodford Dam was covered in Ballast. Before it was regraded it had a metre deep erosion rut running down the middle of the trail.

Loose round rocks about the size and shape of a baby's head. Not a problem if you're going straight and slow but tricky if any degree of force needs to be applied that can make them roll (climbing, braking, leaning in a turn) ...

Ah - Isn't that what MTB is about, never being quite sure what's around the next turn.....but still hooking in anyway.
