Best way to hang a bike up?

I'm a newbie. What's the best way to store my bike in the garage? Horizontal or vertical. I'm thinking of hanging it vertically from either the front or rear wheel using the rim to take the weight using a single bracket. However, I'm concerned oil may leak from the shocks on the front and also the brake calipers. Is this an okay method for storing?

You shouldn't get any leaks hanging vertically. You can get something like this:

Think Storage World sells similar.

FWIW, if you've ever been in BA's workshop that's how they store everyone's bike before/after service.

If you want to store horizontally you can either bolt hooks to the wall or get a post. Check this out for ideas on pole racks from Ikea (Broder or Stolmen seem to work):

I have two of the Topeak Dual-Touch™ Bike Stands in my garage. This enables me to hang 4 bikes up against the wall and out of the way.
They are a little expensive, but it does look cool, and you can see your favourite bikes when you come home from work everyday... which reminds you of why you go to work every day... and love the weekends so much.
I thought about making the one from Ikea parts that Rob posted, but in the end just bought them pre made.

You can check them out here. http://www.topeak.com/products/Storage/Dual-Touc...

These are the same ones that King of the Mountain in Neutral Bay use in their shop, so you can get them there. The cheapest place I have found to buy them though is at Cell Bikes. A bit of a hike thought.
